Unpolitic.me Hides Political Posts On Facebook and Twitter

funny-pictures-monorail-cat1 (1)I know Facebook and Twitter forever changed the political process and promise to usher in a new era of global citizenship, but, sometimes I just need a mind-numbing escape of drunken Vegas photos and cat memes. Now you can relive the old glory days of social media with a new Chrome web app that replaces Twitter and Facebook posts about Obama, Romney, and other serious political stuff with pictures of adorable cats. Roughly 1/5th of social media users admit to blocking politics-happy friends, so this app has a ready-made audience.

The diet-proof holiday meal: Seven ways to stay on track this season

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Holiday dinners are filled with heaping dishes of comfort foods, fattening favorites and savory treats. It is no wonder these meals often leave us feeling stuffed with guilt and holiday remorse.

Patricia Nicholas, a registered dietitian at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center, says you can avoid this psychological turmoil by adding "new favorites" to the traditional dishes. "Healthy meals can be festive as well and hopefully, you have been making healthy changes to your diet all year."

Michelle Morgan, a registered dietitian at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, says, "Stay in tune with your hunger during holiday meals. If you feel satiated and comfortable -- stop eating!"

The following is the holiday feast survival guide -- a road map of sorts to keep you and your diet from straying too far this year.

? Re-think your appetizers. Incorporate healthier pre-meal snack options. Swap the bread bowl for whole-wheat pita with a low-fat bean dip!

? Add some color to your holiday dinner spread with a bowl of fruit or a vegetable salad.

? Choose smaller portions. You can still taste all the foods in your holiday spread without overeating. Remember, an occasional indulgence will not destroy your weight-loss attempts, and if you don't love something don't eat it.

? The only thing that should be stuffed during the holidays is the turkey! Just because there is more food sitting around, does not mean you need to eat more. A forkful of pie will do less damage than a whole piece.

? No need for second helpings; have a calorie-free chat instead. The holidays are a great time to engage in conversation with your loved ones -- and this will not add inches to your waistline. Just be sure to move the conversation away from the food!

? Don't skip meals prior to a holiday party or dinner. You are less likely to overeat if you have eaten well throughout the day.

? Don't allow holiday activity to slow down your exercise program. Bundle up and take a walk after your holiday meal -- this not only can prevent you from overeating and picking at leftovers, but is also a great way to burn off some of the extra calories you may have consumed.

Judge Napolitano: Did Government Have a Legal Obligation to Tell ...

10:58 am ET October 24, 2012

judgenap

It may seem like an obvious question ? but the answer may surprise you. This morning, Judge Andrew Napolitano discussed new documents revealed to Fox News showing that the White House knew the September 11, 2012 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya was pre-planned terrorism, even though the administration maintained it wasn?t for a stretch of time after the attack.

Fox Business Network?s Stuart Varney raised the question of whether or not the president or government officials hold any legal obligation to tell the truth. Napolitano?s answer? No.

The government has no obligation legally to tell the truth or reveal it, he told Varney. A moral obligation, however, yes.

?It?s unfortunate for the president, but fortunate for the voters,? Napolitano continued, citing the fact that now, voters get the chance to respond in way of votes as to how they feel about the current administration?s handling of the Libya attack.

Linda the Bra Lady: On Bra Sizes, Bra Fitting ... - The Lingerie Addict

A couple of weeks ago, Linda Becker (a.k.a. ?Linda the Bra Lady) had an interview on Good Morning America where she said, among other things, said bra brands were guilty of using ?vanity sizing? to make their customers feel like they had smaller backs and larger chests. Unsurprisingly, this point of view caused a lot of ripples in the lingerie community, most of them negative.

I reached out to Linda almost immediately after the piece aired and asked if she?d be willing to do a follow-up interview on The Lingerie Addict. Not only did she strike a nerve worth exploring, I also know how hard it can be to explain any point in a 2 minute soundbite or 140 character tweet.

Though I briefly considered not publishing our interview ( after all, this is ?old news? by internet standards now), I decided to keep it because I believe it pulls together several different conversations that have been happening a lot in lingerie blogosphere lately, especially among full-bust bloggers. Namely, it brings up the stigma attached to large breasts, bra sizing information/misinformation, the war on plus four, inconsistent sizing between brands, vanity sizing, and who gets to call themselves a bra expert. The vanity sizing issue in particular stuck out to me because it illuminated how much emotion is attached to those numbers inside the tag. I was also very interested on what some of my readers (especially readers who?ve been wearing bras for longer than I have) had to say regarding their personal experiences with any changes in bra sizing.

As for me, my position on bras and bra sizing hasn?t changed. I don?t believe every woman has to wear a bra; no matter your size, it?s an individual choice. I don?t subscribe to any one, true method of bra fitting because every woman?s body is different and there is no formula that will work for 100% of women, 100% of the time. And I don?t unreservedly recommend visiting a bra boutique to get fitted. Aside from the fact that it?s not a realistic option for every woman, I also know from personal experience that professional bra fitters don?t get it right all of the time.

Instead, my perspective is the same as it?s ever been. Learn the 3 ways to tell if your bra is fitting correctly. Calculators, bra fitters, trial-and-error?whatever you choose, the most important thing is to get familiar with how a properly fitting bra feels on your body. Because once you know that, it doesn?t matter what the number on the tag reads, what bra calculator you use, what boutique you visit, or what an expert says?you will always know what fits.

Just in case you?re new to this story, here?s a timeline of everything that?s happened so far:

And now on to my interview with Linda. As always, I?d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

1) Hi Linda! Thanks so much for agreeing to do a follow-up interview here on The Lingerie Addict. I appreciate you sparing some time for me and my readers. I know you?re a busy lady, so let?s jump right into it. After your interview on Good Morning America last week, several bloggers took offense to your use of the phrase ?vanity sizing.? I know how hard it is to convey a point in a 2 minute news clip (or a 140 character soundbite), so why don?t you tell us more about what you meant by that ? both for people who are familiar with the news piece and who haven?t seen it.

About 10 years ago, as I was fitting women day in and day out, I started noticing that a few bras were fitting looser in the back than before. As time went on, I continued to see the trend. A woman who would fit perfectly into a 36 band bra suddenly needed a 32 to get the same fit. In fact, this happened to me! When I moved to New York about eight years ago, I fit into a 36D perfectly. But since bra sizes have changed, I now fit into a 32G in the same brand? and (I?m not afraid to say it) I weigh about ten pounds more now! I?m using the same ?good fit criteria? and brands as before. Bra sizes just changed. I think companies did it so that women could feel like they suddenly have a smaller back. It?s the same with clothing!

Vanity sizing or not, bra sizes changed. But let?s be real. I think it?s naive to think that vanity sizing only exists in clothing and not in bras. I?m also not the first to mention this, as this NY Times article pointed out: ?Women Are Shocked by Their New Bra Size.?

2) I know for a fact that several people were bothered by the headline, ?Bra Sizes are a Scam!? I didn?t watch the live newsclip, but did you ever actually say scam? If so, why that particular word? And, if not, how do you feel about that word being used to describe your view on vanity sizing?

Scam was not my word. Sorry to disappoint! I think the media chose that word to amp up the ?gasp? factor. It?s a bit negative, but I don?t really mind it. It makes women take notice. And what I really want to do is help these women out. Those that have been wearing bras for more than 10 years now deserve to know that sizes have changed, that it?s not just their imagination. I don?t think that announcing that bras sizes have changed is terrible, a ?scam?, or ?calling out? vendors. Industry standards change. It happens. I just think women deserve to know about it. What?s most important to me is helping women find the best fitting bra ? that?s what I?ve been doing since I started more than 25 years ago!

3) Now I haven?t worn a bra for the last 10 years, so I can?t personally speak to if my size has changed lately, but how did you arrive at the conclusion that bras are vanity sized now? Did you compare any bras from the past to bras today? Did you reach out to any lingerie companies? Or is this based on your experience as a bra fitter? And if it based on your personal experience, how would you respond to claims that that?s not a valid way of measuring changes in size?

Thank you for admitting that you haven?t been wearing a bra for more than 10 years. I think a lot of the people trying to stir the pot do not have the same years of experience that I have. I have been fitting bras for over 25 years. I?m not just the namesake of my company. I actually fit women all day long. I have fit literally thousands and thousands of women in bras. Again, my ?good fit? criteria is pretty strict, and has not changed over the years ? including the importance of a snug bra band. After fitting women every single day for 25 years in the same brands? it was impossible not to notice the difference in sizing.

My response to the claims from other fitters saying that experience is not a valid way of measuring changing sizes: really?! I would love to sit down and measure every bra from every company dated from every year for the past ten years? but there?s no need. I?ve been fitting the same bras, the same way, on thousands of women. They?ve changed.

I have been working closely with lingerie and bra manufacturers for years, and they didn?t actually come out and say that their sizes changed to boost sales and egos. It?s my educated guess that bra companies saw the tiny women with full busts on TV and adjusted their bra sizes to help reflect this. Don?t tell me women aren?t vain about their band size. I have women jump for joy when they find out that a 30 or 32 bra fits them better than a 36 or 38. Who doesn?t want to have a slimmer, smaller back?! We?re only human, after all.

4) Have you heard from any bra brands in reply to your interview on Good Morning America? If so, can you share what they had to say?

No. They know I?m right. Bra companies call me up frequently to discuss the way their new styles are fitting, get feedback etc. They know what?s going on. In the end, it?s my job as a bra fitter to adjust to what?s going on in the industry. Also, I never called out anyone in particular. This was an industry change.

5) There have been a lot of new lingerie companies on the scene lately. Do you think the vanity sizing issue applies to all brands and all sizes or is concentrated in certain areas like full bust sizing or European bras or high-end brands or something different? Are there any companies in particular that you believe are now using vanity sizes?

Please remember that I can only comment on brands that I?ve been carrying at my stores. Here?s a list. The brands that have been around for many years are the brands I?m talking about. Although a very few have not changed, the vast majority have. New brands just followed the new standard in the industry, which is a bigger band.

Every brand fits differently, and so does every style within a brand. And no, I won?t start naming ?vanity? brands. HA! I don?t intend to place blame on any bra companies here. I just want to enlighten women to the adjustments that the bra world has made to bra sizes.

6) On a related note, one of the things that comes up a lot around bra sizing is the lack of standardization across brands. And several people have used the GMA piece as an opportunity to reiterate their issues with the plus four size method. Do you think vanity sizing is at all related to either of those things?

Oh, believe me, I wish there was a standardization of bra sizes across the globe, but that?s unlikely to happen. Even if there was a strict set standard that every company followed, different fabrics would fit differently, and each woman?s unique shape would still require a slightly different bra. Until there?s a standard in the shape and size of a woman, I don?t think we can every truly have standard sizing. This is why only a trained fitter is really qualified to fit someone for a bra. But, since not everyone can make it in to a shop, these DIY measuring methods are meant to help them find a place to start and enlighten them to the possibility that they could be a whole new size.

That being said, I?ve supported the War On Plus Four in theory (you and I have tweeted much about this), and I?m glad that women are updating their measuring methods, but there?s also not one standard for measuring either.

For example, my bra fitters go through months of Bra School before they are certified to fit. I used to teach a ?plus 5? method (adding about 5 inches to the underbust measurement) more than ten years ago as a general starting point. When my NYC shop opened about 8 years ago, I started teaching a ?plus 3-5? method. I did this to accommodate some of the changes that bra companies were making to their bra bands. Now, eight years later, I?ve migrated to a ?plus 0 to 3? for certain women. And, my goodness, sometimes my fitters and I even have to subtract inches for women with certain shapes! Some people think that adding four inches to an underbust measurement is never OK for a good bra fit. For most of my customers, this is true. But that?s because I help a lot of very full busted women. Let?s be clear: every bra band needs to be snug to fit properly. But the bigger the bust, the snugger the band needs to be. It?s working harder! A bra size is dependent on the way the bra runs, the material, the brand, and the woman?s size, age and comfort. And there ARE women who need to add more than zero inches to get a good fit.

Good fitters know, and I know, that measuring the underbust and adding inches (or not) is just basic a guideline for a bra size starting point, and that there is no one-method-fits-all way to do it. As fitters, we take into account a million more factors than just this one measurement.

7) Another conversation that?s coming up a lot now is how bra sizes are getting bigger. Several newspapers in the UK just published a piece saying the average British woman?s bra size has gone up from a 34B to a 34DD. Do you think that?s because of vanity sizing or are women?s breasts actually getting larger? Or are the two things even related at all?

I think both things could be happening. For one (and remember, I live in the USA where the average dress size has also gone up), breasts are getting bigger, and girls are getting breasts at a younger age. I?m not a doctor, so I won?t even try to tell you why (though I have several opinions on the matter), but it is happening. Also, I think larger cup sizes are more popular because back sizes fit larger. For a woman who could fit perfectly into a 36D ten years ago, she would now need a 32DDD/F just to get the same cup size in the new back size. I think the vanity sizing was really based more on the notion of a slimmer back and the fuller cup size is a result of that.

I don?t think bra companies thought about what this would do to women who already had small bands and full busts. Suddenly, someone who was a 34DD 10 years ago would now need about a 30G or H. I?m very happy that these D+ sizes exist ? women really needed them before, and they especially need them now. But most women are not used to such high letters. In fact, it?s been a real mission of mine to help women understand that a G cup or up is totally common, now! It?s taken years of ?braducation?, instruction, and care to help women get over the stigma of D+ bras and just wear what fits and supports them best. These letters and numbers mean something to women and their ego, so they are reluctant to pick out a new size themselves. It takes going to a bra shop like mine and being professionally fit to finally get it. But besides great fit, I want these women to understand that bra sizes are different now, and not to feel strange picking out a brand new size.

8) Now that you?ve had a little time since the interview, how are you feeling about it? Anything you wish you could have said differently? Would you say the same thing again? Have you had a spike in visitors to the store? Tell us the fall-out?good and bad!

No regrets!

Of course I wish there was more time in the interview to explain all of the factors that go in to a good fit, or what criteria would cause a woman to have to add inches or not to her underbust measurement, etc. But, I?m aware that a short spot on TV is not the place to try to squeeze in all of the Bra School training. They hit some good points about changing sizes, proper care, etc. I do wish they had shown the before and after fittings and the braducation I taught those young women. Phew! One woman went from a 40DD to a 30K!

Sure we?ve had a few more visits to our online shop and store, but I?m happier to help spread the word about the benefits of a good bra. It?s always nice to have a new outlet to get the word out.

I was a bit surprised about the backlash and misunderstanding from others in the field. I think some people thought that I was saying modern bra sizes aren?t necessary. Not so! I carry those sizes! I think most just don?t have the right frame of reference since they haven?t even been in business for 10 years, which is when things really started changing. Regardless, my stance on proper bra fitting and my passion for helping women has always been very clear, and they should have known that. Regardless of what these other experts think, it?s more important to me that women realize that bra sizes have changed, rather than why.

I think bra sizes have changed. And I think vanity sizing played a part in why it happened. I said it and I?m not taking it back! Vanity sizing or not, it doesn?t matter to me. It?s more important to me that women wear the bra that fits and supports them best, regardless of the size. And it?s extremely important to me to help women navigate the tricky world of bra fitting.

Thanks again for taking the time to talk with TLA readers, Linda! You?ve given us all a lot to think about.

Startups turning mobile devices into gaming systems | Talk NYC

The video game industry is under attack. Every month sales of video games and consoles continue their precipitous decline. Why? The number of smartphones and tablets is exploding, giving gamers a range of options for nearly free play, without the cost or hassle of a console or the commitment of a game purchase.

And now it?s not just casual gamers playing ?Angry Birds? on their iPhones. More hard-core gamers are looking for a way to play on the go, so startups are turning mobile devices into full-blown gaming systems.

A startup called Bladepad is working on an Apple iPhone case that turns into a video game controller ? replete with dual illuminated joysticks and the same kind of buttons found on regular console controllers.

The controller connects with the phone via Bluetooth, and is detachable, so it doesn?t add bulk when gamers are on the phone, addressing the iPhone?s limitations when it comes to playing hard-core games ? like first-person shooters or sports games.

The company?s founder, David Baum, turned to crowd-funding site Kickstarter to raise money, and to build support from game developers, but canceled the fundraising push in August.

Now, the company says the product will be available this holiday season. The challenge: ensuring there are enough iPhone apps that work with the controller.

?It?s clear that the quality of mobile games is improving with faster processors and better displays on smart phones and tablets,? said Michael Pachter, managing director of Wedbush Securities. ?This has caused a migration of gamers at the more casual end of the spectrum away from dedicated consoles and handhelds toward mobile phones and tablets.?

Bladepad isn?t the only company looking to turn smartphones into sophisticated video game controllers.

Another startup called iMpulse has turned to Kickstarter to raise funds, Calling it the world?s smallest wireless controller for mobile devices, the company says it?s small enough to add to your key chain, and connects via Bluetooth to what it claims are hundreds of iOS devices and thousands of Android devices.

Consumers seem eager; 25 days ahead of its funding deadline it raised $20,000 more than it was planning to.

These startups have joined a number of more traditional controllers that work via Bluetooth with iPhones or Android devices.

But it?s no surprise that enthusiasts are designing their own versions and hunting for funding; gamers are notoriously passionate about the gaming experience, and smartphones are increasingly popular.

Global smartphone shipments are expected to hit 1.7 billion in 2017, up from 450 million last year ? that?s an annual growth of more than 20 percent, according to UK research firm Ovum.

So what?s the traditional video game industry doing about the rise of mobile devices?

Nintendo is embracing the tablet trend making the controller for its new Wii-U a touch-screen tablet, which looks a lot like an iPad. The Wii-U is designed to enable users to play with both screens, creating a 3-D gaming environment.

And the traditional video game makers ? whose bread and butter is selling packaged software ? are also shifting gears.

Electronic Arts offers several of its biggest video game brands, including Madden Football and Fifa Soccer, on smartphones, charging about $5 per game, plus the option of in-app purchases.

That?s nothing compared to the $60 these games cost at retail, but it allows EA to make its brands ubiquitous across various platforms. The gaming giant has said it wants people to be able to ?snack? on mobile games during the day and then sit down for a proper ?meal? at night.

Credit Suisse initiated coverage on the online video game industry, with an Oct. 10 report discussing the ?proliferation of smartphones and tablets as an alternative content outlet for video game publishers as well as the movement of consumer dollars away from the console market and consumer packaged goods.?

With software consumption becoming ?less tethered to dedicated console hardware,? as the CS report put it, it?s likely that console-style hardware will further accelerate hard-core gamers shift to the mobile platform.

The big question: whether mobile gaming can feed into the traditional gaming business, or whether it cannibalizes it, pushing EA and its rival game-makers to re-adjust to mobile?s lower margins.

Six legal items you may not know about

?

?

?

As a lawyer, I certainly don?t know everything or as some people who call me will tell you, I don?t know anything.? I do learn new things about the law most weeks.? Here are some items that I became aware of in the last couple of years that most people don?t know about.

  1. When it comes to suing for discrimination, your damages for non-economic losses (e.g. your suffering) are capped at $300,000? This is a Federal law, but there is an exception if the discrimination is racial.? In that case there is no cap on damages.
  2. If your doctor blabs to others about your medical problems, you can?t sue him.? Under HIPAA, your physician is supposed to respect your right to privacy.? If they blow it, they could lose their license or the Department of Health could fine them up to $250,000, but you can?t sue them for violating HIPAA.
  3. If you sign a birth certificate and years later you are proven not to be the father, you are still on the hook for supporting the child.? The only way out of this is if the mom lets you off the hook.? Otherwise you are stuck.? Kind of a crappy law, but it?s true.
  4. A business can?t send someone an unsolicited text message.? If they do it?s spam, but since you have to pay for text messaging, they can be sued for it for up to $1,500 per violation.? So imagine if they send 1,000 spam texts.? Before they know if they could be facing a seven figure law suit.? The same is true for unwanted faxes.? But you can still send all the texts you want to the girl you are stalking as long as you aren?t trying to sell her something.
  5. If your spouse cheats, you can?t sue their lover, except . . .? You need to show actual damages which would be proven by getting counseling of some sort.? You can?t just testify about all of the grief you have had.? You almost never see these cases happen and when you do they usually don?t result in much of a recovery.
  6. Cell phone companies have a sneaky way of screwing you over.? Most cell phone companies add an arbitration clause in to their contracts with you.? It basically states that if there is a dispute you have to bring the case to arbitration and this prevents your claim from being a class action.? So if you are ripped off $100 and 50,000 other people have the exact same problem, you all need to bring your own individual cases.? Of course that?s not worth the time or effort so everyone just eats the crap sandwich and acts bitter about it.

Buying Pre-Foreclosure Real Estate For First Time Homebuyers ...

betterluck.jpg

Buying foreclosure real estate can be difficult, frustrating and at best a total waste of time. That is, it can be all of those things to an unwary new investor straight out of a ?Make Big Money In Foreclosure Real Estate? seminar. For the knowledgeable investor however, foreclosure real estate really can be a satisfying source of good income ? and a golden opportunity for first time homebuyers.

The Right Type Of Person

Most home buyers shopping for a personal residence do not even consider foreclosure property because of the imagined problems. But they should. It is puzzling in a way. There are many couples starting out without much money or credit who buy a ?fixer? and spend considerable time and money fixing it up while they are living in it. They then turn around and sell it to move up to a more expensive fixer and begin the process all over again.

If this describes you, you should really consider a foreclosure property. But you need to equip yourself with a little knowledge first so you don?t suffer the pain and disappointment common to so many trying this route. Let?s start with the basics.

Foreclosure or Pre-foreclosure

The term ?foreclosure? brings to the minds of most people a scene in which a home is auctioned off on the court house steps and you bid against other interested investors. You do not want to do this. It is hard to get the edge on the experienced bidders who have done this many times. What you want is a ?pre-foreclosure? property.

A pre-foreclosure property is one on which the bank has begun foreclosure because the owner has missed several mortgage payments but it has not yet reached the auction sale stage. A key to successful pre-foreclosure investing is to build trust with the homeowner so that you can gather the information you need and move quickly to put together a deal that everyone will agree to.

Pre-foreclosure Properties Can Be Profitable

Done correctly, buying a pre-foreclosure property can be a profitable experience even for a first time home buyer. You have ample time to research them because you can buy them up until the day of the foreclosure auction. When you buy a pre-foreclosure, you help save the homeowner?s credit by avoiding a foreclosure auction. You should keep this in mind. You are not taking advantage of the homeowner in distress. You are helping him/her avoid a current and many future credit related problems. Pre-foreclosure investing makes everyone involved a winner.

Lenders typically don?t bother explaining borrowers? rights and options. They just want to collect their money. You have the opportunity to help homeowners avoid foreclosure, salvage their credit rating, and get on with their lives. And you can gain a home of your own ? or resell it and make money by doing it.

You can end up saving tens of thousands of dollars on the purchase of your home by investing in a pre-foreclosure property. They are your opportunity to buy low and sell high, quickly maximizing your equity.

Repairs Will Be Needed

It is not all gravy. Most of the better opportunities you find will need a lot of tender loving care to get them back in shape. They may need carpeting, up-dated or repaired appliances, electrical or plumbing. Roofs may need to be replaced. All of them will probably need painting and quite a bit of landscaping work. If a person is short of money and facing foreclosure, these things simply do not get any attention.

Summary

Buying a pre-foreclosure property can be of a benefit to both yourself and to the current homeowner. It is not always easy but it can be very rewarding. Unless you are a well qualified handyman yourself, you need to get an estimate from qualified professionals on what it would take to bring the home up to standard. Don?t rush or get discouraged. Buying a pre-foreclosure home gives you plenty of time to evaluate everything.

Debate moderating: a thankless job

(AP) ? Beneath Bob Schieffer's Southern charm is the tough spine of someone used to dealing with politicians. The moderator of Monday's final presidential debate will need it, because it has been open season on the other journalists who have done that job this campaign.

Thanks to a bitter campaign rivalry, thriving partisan media outlets and the growth of social media, debate moderator is approaching baseball umpire on the scale of thankless jobs.

Jim Lehrer was criticized for not doing enough, Candy Crowley for doing too much and Martha Raddatz worked over about the wedding guest list for a marriage that ended more than a decade ago. Though not unanimously so, the barbs were usually partisan in nature.

"There are millions of people with their hands over their keyboards ready to analyze every single moment of what's happening," said veteran TV journalist Jeff Greenfield. "That puts even more pressure on ... It's a no-win situation."

Conservative columnist George Will called last week's get-together on Long Island the best presidential debate he's ever seen.

It didn't take long, however, for Republican Mitt Romney's supporters to go after CNN's Crowley. They said questions that she chose from undecided voters on immigration, gun control and equal pay for women played to President Barack Obama's strengths. They were incensed when Crowley, faced by two candidates in a dispute over what was said during a presidential address about Libya, corrected Romney by saying Obama had referred to an attack on Americans in Benghazi as an "act of terror." Crowley also noted that others in the administration suggested for nearly two weeks that the reaction to an anti-Muslim video was a motivating factor in the attack.

Radio host Rush Limbaugh called Crowley's work "an act of journalistic terror."

"If there were any journalistic standards, what she did last night would have been the equivalent of blowing up her career like a suicide bomber," he said.

The conservative Media Research Center criticized Crowley for having only one question on a foreign policy issue, even though this Monday's Schieffer-moderated debate is supposed to focus on foreign policy.

Thanks to a clock that airs on CNN's screen during the debate, some conservatives saw as a sign of bias that Obama spoke for 44 minutes, 4 seconds during the debate, compared to Romney's 40:50. This prompted CNN to count the actual words spoken by each candidate. The faster-talking Romney said 7,984 words and Obama 7,506.

Criticism of Crowley was a relentless post-debate topic on Fox News Channel, which knows CNN isn't popular among Republicans in its audience. Conservatives on Fox and liberals on MSNBC offer an echo chamber for partisan complaints and have far greater prominence than they had even a decade ago.

"I knew from the start," Crowley told The Associated Press, "somebody is going to be unhappy no matter what you do."

Crowley's bosses leapt to her defense: "She had to deal with the tricky format, the nervous questioners, the aggressive debaters, all while shutting out the pre-debate attempts to spin and intimidate her," CNN U.S. chief Mark Whitaker said in a memo to staff. "She pulled it off masterfully."

Even as each debate progresses, Twitter is crackling with reactions. Type in the moderator's name in a search and the screen immediately fills with tweets. Generally, it's a dependable way to gauge how a candidate is doing. The harsher one party's reaction to a moderator is, the tougher time their candidate is having onstage.

"I've never known the winning side to (complain)," said Aaron Brown, the former ABC and CNN anchor who is now a professor at Arizona State University.

Frustration against Lehrer boiled over predominantly among Democrats like Michael Moore and Rachel Maddow who were witnessing Obama's admittedly poor performance in the first debate. The former PBS host said he essentially tried to get out of the way, asking general questions and letting the candidates go after each other.

"I wondered if we needed a moderator since we had Mitt Romney," Obama's deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said, even though her candidate talked longer. As in the second debate, Romney spoke more words.

ABC's Raddatz generally received strong reviews for her work moderating the one debate between Vice President Joe Biden and challenger Paul Ryan. Conservative media was buzzing days before the event, however, with the story that future president Obama attended her 1991 wedding to Julius Genachowski, Obama's Harvard classmate. The couple divorced in 1999. Allusions to the wedding popped up in grumbling tweets by Republicans about Raddatz's questioning.

One motive of the pre- and post-debate criticism is to "work the refs," to let the moderators know that partisans are watching. If intimidation works, even on a subtle level, it can seep into their performances at a time when even modest advantages can make a big difference.

During the second debate, George Mason University went so far as to count how many times each candidate and Crowley interrupted one another. They found that Romney was interrupted 58 times and Obama 43. The numbers came with little context, however, so it wasn't clear how many interruptions were related to candidates exceeding agreed-upon time limits.

Crowley's role in the Libyan discussion also raised the issue of how much the moderators should be prepared to practice journalism while onstage. If you hear something factually incorrect or misleading, is it your duty to point it out to viewers, or is that strictly the candidates' job?

For most viewers, the answer no doubt has to do with which candidate is being corrected.

So let's get this moderator's job straight:

Craft sharp questions to get the candidates to talk, while being meticulously fair not to challenge one more than another. Keep an eye on the clock so one candidate doesn't get to hog the time. Don't be bullied; be firm in forcing the candidates to move on. But be flexible enough to keep a productive discussion flowing. Know the difference. Keep the focus off yourself. And do it all on live television before some 60 million people.

Any applicants?

"There is not enough money to get me to do one of these things," Brown said.

Intelligence Shows No Planning for Benghazi Consulate Attack

The latest intelligence assessment of the attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi indicates there was little if any pre-planning for it and that it was in part an opportunistic response to the protests at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo.

Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the attack, which has become a political hot potato in the presidential campaign with questions over when the Obama administration called the attack an act of terrorism.

"Right now, there isn't any intelligence that the attackers pre-planned their assault days or weeks in advance," said a U.S. intelligence official. "The bulk of available information supports the early assessment that the attackers launched their assault opportunistically after they learned about the violence at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo." But the official added that "no one is ruling out that some of the attackers may have aspired to attack the U.S. in Benghazi."

Republican lawmakers have seized on U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice's comments on Sunday talk shows days on September 16 attributing the deadly Benghazi attack to spontaneous protests against an anti-Muslim film made in the U.S. that had been posted on the Internet. As more information emerged they pointed to the use of mortars and RPG's in the attack as indicating it was not a spontaneous protest as the Obama administration had claimed, but an act of terrorism.

Rice's comments were based on talking points she had been provided by the intelligence community. The intelligence official said those talking points were written for members of Congress and senior U.S. officials so they "could say something preliminary about the attacks." The official said they reflected "the early indications of extremist involvement in a direct assault" and that "it wasn't until after the points were used in public that people reconciled contradictory information and assessed there probably wasn't a protest around the time of the attack."

On September 28 a spokesman for the Director of National Intelligence's office issued a press release revising the initial assessment that the attack on "began spontaneously following protests earlier that day at our embassy in Cairo." The spokesman said new information indicated it "was a deliberate and organized terrorist attack carried out by extremists."

The DNI said it remained unclear if "if any group or person exercised overall command and control of the attack, and if extremist group leaders directed their members to participate. However, we do assess that some of those involved were linked to groups affiliated with, or sympathetic to al-Qaeda."

The current assessment is the latest shift in a narrative that has become politicized on Capitol Hill and the presidential campaign. At a hearing before the House Oversight House and Government Reform Committee last week, State Department officials said there had been no protests outside the consulate compound at least an hour before the attack.

The official said the assessment evolved once again as "it was clear from the outset that a group of people gathered that evening." He added, "A key question early on was whether extremists took over a crowd or if the guys who showed up were all militants. It took time-until that next week-to sort through varied and sometimes conflicting accounts to understand the group's overall composition."

Syria: Explosion hits Damascus, at least 10 killed

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? An explosion hit the Old City of Damascus on Sunday, killing at least 10 people and wounding dozens of other civilians, Syrian activists said. It came as President Bashar Assad discussed the civil war in his country with visiting U.N. peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi.

The blast targeted a police station in the Bab Touma neighborhood, a Syrian official said, insisting on anonymity because he is not allowed to make press statements.

Bab Touma, a popular attraction for shoppers, is inhabited mostly by members of Syria's Christian minority.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported the death toll. It said it was not immediately clear if the victims were civilians or policemen. But it described the blast as "strong" and said ambulances and police cars were rushing to the area.

No other details were immediately available.

Brahimi, who represents the U.N. and the Arab League, met with Assad in another part of the capital. Brahimi has appealed for a truce between Assad's forces and rebels for the four-day Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which begins Oct. 26.

Brahimi arrived in Damascus Friday after a tour of Middle East capitals to drum up support for the cease-fire, which he hopes will pave the way for a longer-term truce.

A range of countries including Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Germany have thrown their support behind the idea, but neither the Syrian government nor the rebels have signed on.

Brahimi met Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem on Saturday. A Foreign Ministry statement released after the meeting did not mention the proposed truce, but said the two men discussed "objective and rational circumstances to stop the violence from any side in order to prepare for a comprehensive dialogue among the Syrians."

Syrian government forces and rebels have both agreed to and then promptly violated internationally brokered cease-fires in the past, and there is little indication that either is willing to stop fighting now.

General Comment on the ICANN Multi-Stakeholder ?Model & DCA?s Contribution to the ICANN Africa Strategy

Presented by:

Ms. Sophia Bekele, Executive Director, DotConnectAfrica

I?wish to congratulate ICANN for a successful meeting outcome, and the host country Canada for their superb hospitality.? The CN Tower was amazing!. ?I also thank the ICANN leaders for the opportunity to share my comments at this Public Forum.DCA Trust has been participating in the ICANN Global Community and attending the ICANN International Meetings regularly and actively within the past few years.

DCA Trust is also a new gTLD applicant, and has submitted an application for the .Africa generic Top-Level Domain.

This ICANN-45 Meeting in Toronto has provided a landmark opportunity for the presentation of the initial draft of the ICANN Africa Strategy. ?We are thankful for the increased attention that is now being given to Africa, in order to put it more firmly on the ICANN Global Map.

ICANN thrives on its multi-stakeholder, transparent and consensus-based approach to policy development and implementation. ?Meanwhile, the same multi-stakeholder approach is often criticized, but the critics of this model are unable to devise an alternative approach that could effectively replace the multi-stakeholder model, and serve the global public interest on issues of Global Internet Governance. A global Internet requires that different stake-holders participate in its governance, and that a proper forum is provided for any interested party to participate ensure that such voices are heard. At the very minimum, the debate will be enriched based on democratic principles. DCA will continue to support the multi-stakeholder concept, without needing to over-emphasize that in the absence of the multi-stakeholder model, DCA Trust, as a private, non-profit, non-partisan, independent organization will not have the opportunity to be heard in matters of Global Internet Governance and as an active participant in the global ICANN Community.

At the ICANN-44 Prague meeting, DCA Trust had been concerned that a preliminary meeting was held between some ICANN officials and certain group(s) of the African constituency at ICANN. ? DCA Trust was not invited to that meeting, for which reason we demonstrated our grievance by writing a letter to ICANN to protest our exclusion. It later transpired that the meeting was to lay the initial framework? for commencing the ICANN? Africa Strategy, and we interpreted our apparent exclusion from participating in that meeting as a prelude to our non-involvement in the process of the ICANN Africa Strategy ? both in formulation and implementation. We complained again based on multi-stakeholder principles. We strongly believe that all those participating as recognized constituents of the African Community at ICANN should be involved in any ICANN Africa Strategy. Even whilst maintaining that our initial complaints were valid, we also believe that all that is now in the past and that DCA Trust was able to make its point.

Accordingly, in moving forward towards future and positive cooperative endeavors, we are thankful to Mr. Tarek Kamel, the Senior Adviser to the ICANN President & CEO, who also has the primary responsibility for leading the formulation and implementation of the ICANN Africa Strategy. Mr. Kamel has been gracious enough to meet with DCA Trust here in Toronto and discuss the framework under which DCA Trust will participate in the ICANN Africa Strategy. To this end, DCA Trust is pleased to announce that it has developed a new initiative ? the Internet Business Council for Africa (IBCA) ? that is aimed at increasing the African private sector participation at ICANN; to be implemented as a component part of the ICANN Africa Strategy.

The principal objective of this initiative is to help promote and increase the multi-stakeholder diversity at ICANN in line with the broader strategic objectives of the ICANN Strategic Plan covering the three-year period that spans July 2013 to June 2016.? We envision that the inclusion and early adoption of the proposed IBCA initiative as a key component of the ICANN Africa Strategy will strengthen ICANN?s multi-stakeholder model; as the organization increases the visibility of its work and overall outreach/communication activities in Africa, and

DCA Trust is proud to propose this as a strategic input that would enable it achieve further levels of cooperation with ICANN in the implementation of its Strategic Plan. The private sector is seen as the key driver of socio-economic transformation and enabler of economic growth in an emerging Africa, therefore, any initiative that attempts to increase the participation of this important business and non-governmental constituency in Global Internet Governance will no doubt strengthen the multi-stakeholder work of ICANN. DCA Trust has already submitted a copy of the IBCA proposal to ICANN through Mr. Tarek Kamel, and will also avail copies to the ICANN leaders.

In closing, DCA Trust is thankful for the opportunity afforded by this ICANN-45 Public Forum in Toronto to share its proposed IBCA initiative.

Thank you once again.
