Greek electricity workers call 48-hour strikes

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece's electricity workers said on Friday they will start rolling 48-hour strikes as early as next week to protest austerity measures demanded by the country's international lenders.

Strikes at state-controlled utility PPC have in the past led to rotating power cuts across the country, as the grid operator reduces the load to prevent wider blackouts. PPC is the country's single power retailer and produces about 70 percent of all electricity generated in the country.

The strike will begin as early as October 1 if the government submits new austerity measures to parliament next week, said PPC's labor union GENOP-DEH, one of the most militant unions. If the vote takes place later in the month, the strikes will be postponed accordingly.

The walkout poses yet another challenge to the wage and pension cuts that Athens is negotiating with the European Union and the International Monetary Fund to obtain fresh bailout funds.

"These measures ... must not be allowed to go through. GENOP-DEH wants to reverse this policy," the union said.

GENOP also urged labor union confederation GSEE, the country's biggest, to step up its anti-austerity action after a nationwide 24-hour strike on Wednesday. If GSEE agrees to new labor action, GENOP will call off its strike, it said.

Calif. man behind anti-Muslim film ordered jailed

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The surrounding mystery of the man behind the crudely produced anti-Islamic video that sparked violence in the Middle East took a strange turn after he appeared in court and gave yet another name in a string of aliases.

Arrested on Thursday after authorities said he violated his probation from a 2010 check fraud conviction, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula told a judge his real name was Mark Basseley Youseff. He said he'd been using that name since 2002, even though he went by Nakoula in his fraud case.

The full story about Nakoula and the video "Innocence of Muslims" still isn't known more than two weeks after violence erupted in Egypt and Libya, where Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three others were killed in Benghazi. Violence related to the film has since spread, killing dozens more.

Citing a lengthy pattern of deception and the potential to flee, U.S. Central District Chief Magistrate Judge Suzanne Segal ordered Nakoula to remain in prison without bond until another judge can hold a hearing to determine if he broke the terms of his probation.

"The court has a lack of trust in this defendant at this time," Segal said.

Prosecutors noted Nakoula had eight probation violations, including lying to his probation officers and using aliases. He could face new charges that carry a maximum two-year prison term.

After his 2010 conviction, Nakoula was sentenced to 21 months in prison and was barred from using computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer, though prosecutors said none of the violations involved the Internet. He also wasn't supposed to use any name other than his true legal name without the prior written approval of his probation officer.

Three names, however, have been associated with Nakoula this month alone.

The movie was made last year by a man who called himself Sam Bacile. After the violence erupted, a man who identified himself as Bacile spoke to media outlets including The Associated Press, took credit for the film and said it was meant to portray the truth about Muhammad and Islam, which he called a cancer.

The next day, the AP determined there was no Bacile and linked the identity to Nakoula, a former gas station owner with a drug conviction and a history of using aliases. Federal authorities later confirmed there was no Bacile and that Nakoula was behind the movie.

Some of the false statements in Nakoula's alleged probation violations had to do with the film, Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Dugdale said. Nakoula told probation officials his role was just writing the script, and denied going by the name Sam Bacile in connection with the film, Dugdale said.

Before going into hiding, Nakoula acknowledged to the AP that he was involved with the film, but said he only worked on logistics and management.

Nakoula, a Christian originally from Egypt, then went into hiding after he was identified as the man behind the trailer, which depicts Muhammad as a womanizer, religious fraud and child molester. He met with federal probation officials two weeks ago, led out of his home in suburban Cerritos in the middle of the night, flanked by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies and cloaked in heavy clothing to protect his identity.

The public got their first good look at Nakoula on Thursday, although the news media was banned from the courtroom and reporters had to watch the proceedings on a TV in a nearby courthouse.

Nakoula wore beige pants and a collared shirt when he was led into the courtroom handcuffed and shackled. He appeared relaxed, smiling at one point before the hearing and conferring with his attorney.

Nakoula's attorney Steven Seiden sought to have the hearing closed and his client released on $10,000 bail. He argued Nakoula has checked in with his probation officer frequently and made no attempts to leave Southern California.

Seiden was concerned that Nakoula would be in danger in federal prison because of Muslim inmates, but prosecutors said he likely would be placed in protective custody.

Lawrence Rosenthal, a constitutional and criminal law professor at Chapman University School of Law in Orange, said it was "highly unusual" for a judge to order immediate detention on a probation violation for a nonviolent crime, but if there were questions about Nakoula's identity it was more likely.

"When the prosecution doesn't really know who they're dealing with, it's much easier to talk about flight," Rosenthal said. "I've prosecuted individuals who'd never given a real address. You don't know who you're dealing with, and you're just going to have very limited confidence about their ability to show up in court."

Enraged Muslims have demanded punishment for Nakoula, and a Pakistani cabinet minister has offered a $100,000 bounty to anyone who kills him.

First Amendment advocates have defended Nakoula's right to make the film while condemning its content. And federal officials likely will face criticism from those who say Nakoula's free speech rights were trampled by his arrest on a probation violation.

In arguing that Nakoula is a possible flight risk, Dugdale said Nakoula couldn't even reveal something as fundamental as his real name.

"He's a person who simply can't be trusted," he said.

Taxidermists, Artists Bring Aging Museum Animals Back to Lifelike
The North American mammals at the American Museum of Natural History are coming back to (near) life. Artists, taxidermists, conservators and designers have been working for a year on everything from re-coloring faded bear fur and restoring paintings of the Grand Canyon to dusting leaves and installing new energy-efficient and less-damaging lighting.

Chart shows households with student loans

(AP) ? With college enrollment growing, student debt has stretched to a record number of U.S. households ? nearly 1 in 5 ? with the biggest burdens falling on the young and poor.

The analysis by the Pew Research Center found that 22.4 million households, or 19 percent, had college debt in 2010. That is double the share in 1989, and up from 15 percent in 2007, just prior to the recession ? representing the biggest three-year increase in student debt in more than two decades.

The increase was driven by higher tuition costs as well as rising college enrollment during the economic downturn. The biggest jumps occurred in households at the two extremes of the income distribution. More well-off families are digging deeper into their pockets to pay for costly private colleges, while lower-income people in search of higher-wage jobs are enrolling in community colleges, public universities and other schools as a way to boost their resumes.

Because of the sluggish economy, fewer college students than before are able to settle into full-time careers immediately upon graduation, contributing to a jump in debt among lower-income households as the young adults take on part-time jobs or attend graduate school, according to Pew.

As a share of household income, the debt burden was the greatest for the poorest 20 percent of households, or those making less than $21,044. In all, 40 percent of U.S. households headed by someone younger than age 35 owed college debt, the highest share of any age group.

"Comparing the debt to their economic resources, the lowest-income fifth of households are the ones experiencing the greatest stresses," said Richard Fry, a senior economist at Pew who analyzed the numbers.

Noting that college enrollment has continued to climb since 2010, Fry added: "Until college enrollment peaks, I would not expect the amount of outstanding student debt to level off."

The study released Wednesday is based on the Survey of Consumer Finances, conducted every three years and sponsored by the Federal Reserve. The numbers are as of 2010, the latest available for that survey. Separate Fed data have pointed to subsequent increases in student loans since 2010 that totaled $914 billion in the April-June quarter, but don't provide demographic breakdowns on who shoulders the biggest burdens.

Both President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger in this year's election, Mitt Romney, have been seeking to court young voters with differing visions on how to address rising tuition and growing college debt. Obama wants to make tax credits for college expenses permanent and expand Pell grants for lower-earning families. Romney says that making government the direct source of federal student loans has not worked and simply drives tuition higher. He stresses the need to curb college costs.

The Pew report found that the richest 20 percent of households, or those with annual income of $97,586 or higher, owed the biggest share of outstanding student debt ? 31 percent, up from 28 percent in 2007. The poorest 20 percent of households also saw their debt grow, to 13 percent from 11 percent.

The richest households saw significant increases in per-household debt. For those with annual income of $97,586 to $146,791, college debt rose from $25,921 in 2007 to $31,989. For the richest 10 percent, making at least $146,792, college debt increased from $36,033 to $44,810.

Across all households, the average outstanding college debt increased from $23,349 to $26,682. For the poorest 20 percent of households, the average debt rose from $19,018 to $20,640.

In recent years, Americans have cut back on several other types of borrowing such as credit card use, with average household indebtedness falling from $105,297 in 2007 to $100,720 in 2010. Broken down by income levels, however, average total indebtedness for the bottom 20 percent of households by income actually rose from $17,579 in 2007 to $26,779; for the higher income groups, average indebtedness either was unchanged or declined.

Baby Bugs from 300 Million Years Ago Pictured in 3D

Researchers have made 3-D reconstructions of two 300-million-year-old insect nymphs by putting the rare fossils under an X-ray.

The scientists have not pinned down the precise identity of either bug, or matched them with their adult counterparts, but they say their scans offer the most complete picture of baby insects from this prehistoric Paleozoic Era.

Both insects are just over 0.8 inches (2 centimeters) long and their fossils, which date to the late Carboniferous period (part of the Paleozoic Era), were found at Montceau-les-Mines in France. The researchers, led by Russell Garwood, of the U.K.'s University of Manchester, published their reconstructions online Sept. 25 in the journal PLoS ONE.

The scientists named one of the insects Anebos phrixos, drawing on the Greek words for "young" and "bristling," the latter of which alludes to the insect's defensive spines. The researchers did not name the other insect, but said it resembles a modern cockroach with a flat body that allowed it to squeeze into narrow crevices and avoid making shadows that might attract predators.

The 3-D reconstructions also gave the researchers detailed pictures of the young insects' mouthparts, which hold clues about their diet. In the roach-like nymph, they found little evidence of specialization in its mandibles, maxilla and other parts, suggesting it ate just about anything.

"Much like modern forest roach nymphs, they could have eaten decaying and rotting matter on the forest floor," the scientists wrote.

Researchers have been turning to CT scans to analyze fossils in a non-invasive way. Another team reported Sept. 18 in the journal Paleontology that they reconstructed a spiny mollusk that crept around the sea 390 million years ago with the same method. Taking their digital reconstruction a step further, they used a 3-D printer to make a physical model of the sea creature. [ See Images of Reconstructed Sea Creature ]

Appliance Repair and maintenance at home

When you are experiencing difficulties with your main appliances, you need to have them fixed immediately. As with anything, you want to approach appliance repair the correct way. Before hurrying into anything, take a few moments to take into account the steps you need to take.
Initially, make certain you go through the guide for your product. The problem might be something as basic as connections or cables. The majority of us do not take the time to actually comprehend how our appliances function, and we hurry into calling someone for the required repair. To prevent an embarrassing scenario and unwanted cost, make certain you have everything attached appropriately and plugged in. It may seem silly, but it takes place.
After that, determine if you possess a warranty on the appliance. If that's the case, make sure you go through the warranty cautiously. Before getting your repair carried out, understand what may or may not be covered under your plan. Numerous warranties come with fine prints and conditions, for example whom you can get in touch with for appliance maintenance. You paid the premium to possess the warranty, make certain you do not waste the coverage by attempting to deal with the task yourself or by getting in touch with an unapproved repair specialist.

If you are useful and would like to try to deal with the repair yourself (and may do so without compromising any warranty coverage) make certain you obtain all the details you can regarding the job. There is a wealth of data on the internet, such as guides and manuals for easy appliance repair. Some sites even provide a live appliance technician to speak with online, although this is generally a paid service.

Do not dig into (or disassemble) anything until you are certain you know the entire issue and fix. Even though "do it yourself" is a terrific approach to take, things could possibly go haywire very swiftly. The more knowledge you have got of the device you are doing work on, the better likelihood of becoming successful with your home appliance repair.

If you decide (or if warranty dictates) to have your repair performed by professionals, ensure that you find your company properly. Status tells a great deal. On many occasions, the store you acquired your appliance from will also do appliance repair or advise a company for you to employ. If you possess a warranty that requires a specific firm, make certain to work with them. Just as before, you should never void your service contract. If you are in a position to opt for your private repair specialist, look around. Examine online reviews, check with your friends or officemates, uncover what organization commercial businesses work with. You really want to be extremely sure as possible that your appliance repair is completed properly the initial time and with as bit of personal charge as possible. Take into account, though, that most economical truly does not often mean most effective. Affordable rate is critical to most of us, but dependable and credibleness is quite significant, as well.

Surely, protective maintenance will enable you to keep away from appliance repair. When you receive your appliance, remember to acquire all the information of it as possible. Undertake the tiny measures of frequent maintenance to stay clear of serious, high priced repairs. You'll be delighted you did!

Yahoo gives new CFO big raise to leave his old job

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Yahoo's new chief financial officer is getting a big raise to join the struggling Internet company.

Ken Goldman, who will become Yahoo's CFO next month, is starting out with an annual salary of $600,000 and could earn a bonus of up to $540,000, according to documents filed Wednesday. He is also getting restricted stock and stock options valued at $12 million.

The stock awards will gradually vest over the next three to four years, and could end up being worth more or less than $12 million. That depends on how Yahoo's long-slumping stock fares under a new management team led by Marissa Mayer, who became the company's CEO two months ago.

The pay package represents a significant bump from Goldman's current job as CFO of Fortinet Inc., a security software maker based in Sunnyvale, Calif., less than five miles from Yahoo Inc.'s headquarters in the same city.

Fortinet paid Goldman an annual salary of $327,818, according to the company's most recent compensation disclosures six months ago. Goldman, 63, also was eligible for a bonus of about $200,000 at Fortinet. Including stock options and other awards, Goldman's total 2011 compensation package at Fortinet was valued at $1.6 million.

Although Goldman already is in line to make more money in his new job, Yahoo also agreed to give him some additional restricted stock to compensate him for some of the long-term incentives he is giving up at Fortinet. The so-called "make-whole" payment consists of 76,000 units of restricted Yahoo stock that will be doled out on a monthly basis during the next year. Yahoo didn't place a value on this batch of restricted stock. At Yahoo's current market value, the restricted stock would be worth about $1.2 million.

Yahoo's stock has been sagging for years as the company fell behind Google Inc. and Facebook Inc. in the race for online advertising revenue. The shares added a penny to $15.68 in afternoon trading.

Mayer, a former Google executive, is drawing up a new business plan in Yahoo's latest turnaround attempt. As part of that process, Mayer decided to bring in a new CFO to help execute her strategy.

Goldman's starting salary at Yahoo matches what his predecessor, Tim Morse, was getting before his responsibilities were expanded in a management shake-up last year. After Yahoo fired Carol Bartz as its CEO, Morse served as the company's interim leader for four months. Yahoo raised Morse's salary from $600,000 to $750,000.

Yahoo hasn't disclosed whether Morse, 43, will receive a severance package when he leaves the company.

Cleveland airport to dedicate Superman exhibit Oct. 11 | Robot 6 ...

Robot 6

An artist's rendition of what the Superman display might look like

A permanent exhibit will open Oct. 11 at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport honoring Superman and his creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, who dreamed up the superhero as teenagers living in the city?s Glenville neighborhood.

The project was spearheaded by the Siegel & Shuster Society, which raised about $50,000 through donations by fans to allow the idea to take flight. Cleveland City Council approved the proposal in January.

Designed by Studio Graphique, the exhibit will be installed in an open room across from the baggage carousels. Apparently learning a lesson from the snag it encountered with the proposed Superman license plate, the Siegel & Shuster Society has changed the mural?s greeting from ?Welcome to Cleveland ? Birthplace of ? Superman? to ?Welcome to Cleveland ? Where the Legend Began? (with the license plates, DC Comics and Warner Bros. insisted that Superman?s ?birthplace? is Krypton, not Cleveland). There also will be a larger-than-life statue of Superman, intended as a spot for tourist photos.

?We want the phrase, ?Meet me at Superman,? to become a common saying at the airport,? Siegel & Shuster Society President Michael Olszewski tells the Plain Dealer.

The Oct. 11 dedication ceremony will include comments by Siegel?s daughter Laura Siegel Larson and Mayor Frank Jackson, as well as performance by the rhythm section of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. And yes, the musicians will be playing John Williams? theme from from Superman: The Movie.

Last Thursday, I got a call from the Bedford, the independent living community where my mom and dad live.? They said they?d put Mom in an ambulance and sent it to SW Washington Medical Center.? Carol and I rushed over there.? Mom?d had some numbness and swelling in her arm.? They suspected a TIA (transient mini-stroke).? Mom was in good spirits, philosophical, alert, worrying about everybody else.? The symptoms of the TIA seemed to have come and gone already.

They took Mom to get a CAT scan almost immediately.? Meanwhile, nurse after nurse burst into the curtained cubicle where Carol and I were still sitting, did a double-take, turned on their heels and dashed off again.? One wanted to do an EKG; another wanted to draw blood; there were at least half a dozen.? It got to be pretty funny.? Then a staff member wheeled a gurney into the cubicle bearing a white-haired octogenarian woman.? Carol and I blinked, realized it wasn?t Mom, looked at the nurse and said simultaneously, ?That?s not ours!?

They kept Mom for 26 hours.? They ran more tests than the President gets at Walter Reed Army Hospital.? All were negative.? My mother is as healthy as a horse.? We went straight from the hospital to the Old Spaghetti Factory and celebrated with Dad, two brothers and a sister-in-law.

Consequently, today SunWinks! is pleased to present a guest columnist.? His name is Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. This is from the preface to Bagombo Snuff Box, his collection of previously uncollected stories.? He is talking about how to write a story.? After that, there?s a video (<5 min.) which you simply must watch.? It?s hysterical!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now lend me your ears.? Here is Creative Writing 101:
  1. Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.
  2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.
  3. Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.
  4. Every sentence must do one of two things?reveal character or advance the action.
  5. Start as close to the end as possible.
  6. Be a sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them?in order that the reader may see what they are made of.
  7. Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.
  8. Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible. To heck with suspense. Readers should have such complete understanding of what is going on, where and why, that they could finish the story themselves, should cockroaches eat the last few pages.
The greatest American short story writer of my generation was Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964). She broke practically every one of my rules but the first. Great writers tend to do that.
Ms. O'Connor may or may not have broken my seventh rule, "Write to please just one person." There is no way for us to find out for sure, unless, of course, there is a Heaven after all, and she's there, and the rest of us are going there, and we can ask her.
I'm almost sure she didn't break rule seven. The late American psychiatrist Dr. Edmund Bergler, who claimed to have treated more professional writers than any other shrink, said in his book The Writer and Psychoanalysis that most writers in his experience wrote to please one person they knew well, even if they didn't realize they were doing that. It wasn't a trick of the fiction trade. It was simply a natural human thing to do, whether or not it could make a story better.
Dr. Bergler said it commonly required psychoanalysis before his patients could know for whom they had been writing. But as soon as I finished his book, and then thought for only a couple of minutes, I knew it was my sister Allie I had been writing for. She is the person the stories in this book were written for. Anything I knew Allie wouldn't like I crossed out. Everything I knew she would get a kick out of I left in.
Allie is up in Heaven now, with my first wife Jane and Sam Lawrence and Flannery O'Connor and Dr. Bergler, but I still write to please her. Allie was funny in real life. That gives me permission to be funny, too. Allie and I were very close.
In my opinion, a story written for one person pleases a reader, dear reader, because it makes him or her apart of the action. It makes the reader feel, even though he or she doesn't know it, as though he or she is eavesdropping on a fascinating conversation between two people at the next table, say, in a restaurant.
That's my educated guess.
Here is another: A reader likes a story written for just one person because the reader can sense, again without knowing it, that the story has boundaries like a playing field. The story can't go simply anywhere. This, I feel, invites readers to come off the sidelines, to get into the game with the author. Where is the story going next? Where should it go? No fair! Hopeless situation! Touchdown!
Remember my rule number eight? "Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible"? That's so they can play along. Where, outside the Groves of Academe, does anybody like a story where so much information is withheld or arcane that there is no way for readers to play along?
The boundaries to the playing fields of my short stories, and my novels, too, were once the boundaries of the soul of my only sister. She lives on that way.
Amen
? 1999 Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
Complete Guide on Exercise Programs and Health Habits in ...
Reducing Heart Disease Risk
Reducing Heart Disease Risk
Before you are at risk for heart disease or a heart attack, you should take the necessary steps to lead a healthy lifestyle. There are ways you can begin to reduce your risk of heart disease. Before you begin making any drastic changes in your life, you should consult your physician so they will be aware of your changes and help guide you. Before you try taking medications to alter your health, you should try the natural approach. You can control almost every factor of your health with the exception of your gender, family history and age. Other than those factors, you have complete control.
When you begin making these healthy changes you need to understand that these changes are going to make you feel better and need to be adopted for a lifetime. There are several factors such as your diet, physical activity; losing weight and quitting smoking that can help you achieve better health. These are lifestyle changes that can help you turn your life around.
Healthy Eating
One of the very first steps you can take is to eat healthy. This sounds very simple, but in many cases it is about being rational and training your brain and taste buds to accept healthy foods as your basis for nutrition. Typically this means introducing more whole grains, legumes, vegetables and fruits into your diet.
Keep saturated and Trans fat to a minimum. Meats, baked goods, fried foods, dairy products and processed food tend to carry high amounts of these types of fat. These foods tend to raise your bad cholesterol levels. Instead replace them with omega-3 fatty acids found in olive oil and fish. Omega-3 fatty acids can lower your risk of a heart attack and help the prevention of blood clots.
Fiber is very important and can be found in vegetables, fruits and whole grains. When you make your diet a mainstay of such vitamin rich foods you can reduce your LDL cholesterol level and protect your heart. It is also advisable to lower the amount of sugar and salt you consume. The less salt you consume, the better your blood pressure levels remain and reducing the amount of sugar you eat can help you lose weight and control diabetes.
Great Exercise Programs
Exercise is an important key to losing weight, as well as maintaining it. It is not necessary to become an athlete to live a healthy life. When you adopt a sixty minute exercise routine a week, you are helping yourself become physically fit and preventing bad health too. You can join gyms that offer moderate aerobic workout programs with professionals that can make sure you do the exercises properly and do not harm yourself. If you are severely overweight or already have a heart problem, then it is advised that you start very slow and keep your physician informed of your progress and listen to their advice.
In order to see major changes you should exercise for at least two and a half hours every week. The type of exercise that is best for you is a moderately intense aerobic workout. You can also reduce the amount your exercise to an hour and fifteen minutes a week if you increase your workout to an intense and vigorous aerobic activity. All of this information thus far is regarding adults without heart disease.
Quit Smoking
Smoking raises your risk for heart disease. If you are a current smoker, then talk to your physician about products that may help you stop smoking. There are even classes available that can help you curb your nicotine addiction. Second hand smoke should be avoided at all costs, as well. Smoking can be a very addictive habit. You will need the support of your friends and family in order to stop.
Do-It-Yourself Search Engine Optimization | Bisnis Digital
Do-It-Yourself Search Engine Optimization
by: Lois S.
Search engine optimization, or SEO, is big business. If you rely on search engines to bring visitors to your business website, you need to rely on more than luck. Your business will lag far short of its potential unless your site is optimized and re-optimized for search engine results.
What is search engine optimization?
SEO is optimizing your website for search engines, acquiring inbound links, and monitoring your traffic and referring links to use them optimally. SEO is also studying and monitoring your competitors? techniques.
The goal of SEO is to bring in targeted traffic that is organic, i.e., from search results. When people type in a keyword or phrase that you?ve optimized your site for, you want your site to appear on the first page, preferably high on that page. Good SEO results in increased traffic without the cost and time spent on advertising.
The SEO industry
Where there?s a need, there?s an industry ready to help you spend money on that need. SEO firms charge from a few hundred dollars up to six-figure amounts to optimize your site for search engines.
If paying thousands of dollars to an SEO firm isn?t in your budget, consider using SEO packages to optimize your site yourself.
A combination of SEO tools is needed to get the best results. The SEO packages described below offer a variety of tools to help you optimize your site for search engines.
How to hire an SEO firm
If you?d prefer to hire an SEO firm instead, do your research. You?ll be spending a minimum of a few hundred dollars, more likely thousands of dollars for a medium-sized or larger website.
While many SEO firms are good at what they do, the field unfortunately has its share of scammers as well. They may tell you that a variety of tricks such as hidden text or cloaking will improve your site?s position in search engines. In reality, these techniques may get your site banned from search engines. More information is at these pages at Google.com:
? http://www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html Webmaster Guidelines
? http://www.google.com/webmasters/seo.html Search Engine Optimizers
If you?re considering an SEO firm, ask how they measure success. Will your site hits be organic? Look at the sites of SEO firms? clients and the site for the SEO firm itself. Do the sites rank well for keywords at these sites? The search engine results for relevant keywords will indicate how successful an SEO firm is.
New uses for old tools could boost biodiesel output
ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? Tried-and-true techniques could help optimize oilseed yield for biodiesel production, according to studies conducted by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists.
For more than 30 years, near infrared (NIR) reflectance spectroscopy has been used as a rapid and nondestructive method for measuring protein, moisture, and oil levels in whole grains. Now Agricultural Research Service (ARS) research leader Dan Long is studying how to use remote sensing tools to quickly assess seed oil quality and quantity before and after harvest.
ARS is USDA's chief intramural scientific research agency, and this research supports the USDA priority of developing new sources of bioenergy.
Long, who works at the ARS Columbia Plateau Conservation Research Center in Pendleton, Ore., used a special NIR sensor to assess seed oil content in 226 canola samples from Montana, Washington and Oregon. Seed oil concentration is used to estimate extraction efficiency, which is the percentage of oil recovered in relation to the amount of oil in seed.
Using this technique, Long was able to determine that oil concentrations in the samples ranged from 32 percent to 46 percent, and that the NIR sensor estimated seed oil content with an average error of 0.73 percent. A bout of abnormal weather affected results from one group of seeds in this study. If this group had been excluded from the analysis, the overall error rate would have been less than 0.5 percent.
Long believes that NIR sensors could be installed in seed crushing facilities to rapidly and continuously measure the oil content of clean seeds flowing into the expeller, where they are crushed to obtain the oil. Using NIR to monitor extraction efficiency might enable workers to adjust the choke setting on the expeller to compensate for oil loss in meal.
This would boost profits associated with seed processing, and lower the costs of the oil feedstock that is converted into fuel. NIR measurements might also help reduce the number of acres needed for oilseed feedstock production by maximizing seed oil extraction rates in the seed crushing facilities.
Findings from these studies were published earlier this year in the Journal of Near Infrared Spectroscopy.
NFL replacement officials affecting Vegas bets
Las Vegas casinos think this weekend's NFL games will be the highest-scoring ever thanks to the league's replacement officials.
Oddsmakers say casinos are changing their expectations as interim referees add new variables to the game, changing its pace and the approaches taken by players and coaches.
Casinos haven't fully changed lines yet because there have been only two weeks of games and referees might adjust how they call games based on weekly feedback from the league. But oddsmaker Mike Colbert of Cantor Gaming says home teams will deserve an extra half-point in their favor if games are called all year the way they were officiated in Week 2.
"It's starting to concern us a bit," Colbert said. "(Officials) should have no influence on the total or the side."
Penalties were skewed in favor of home teams during the first two weeks this year, with visitors getting 55.1 percent of 419 penalties. Last year began in a similar fashion? visitors took 54.8 percent of 407 total penalties through the first two games ? before evening out over the rest of the season. Penalties were relatively even between home and road teams for all of 2010 and 2011, and it's anybody's guess how this year's penalties will split.
Sports books make money by encouraging balanced betting action; they get it by using point spreads to account for the advantage one team has over another. In Week 2, home teams went 11-4-1 after going 8-8 in Week 1.
Future lines with interim officials will take a lot of guesswork, said Colbert, whose company runs sports books in six Las Vegas casinos and provides betting lines for the vast majority of Nevada sports books.
"You've got to use prior experience ? I don't know if anyone has prior experience with something like this," he said.
NFL teams generally get a 3-point edge in sports books just for playing at home. An extra half-point added to that would be the equivalent of a team having a superstar receiver or running back on the field or an opponent missing its star because of injury, gambling expert RJ Bell of Pregame.com said.
"That's a strong statement that the people are really considering this to be a legitimate phenomenon," Bell said. "When you're taking hundreds of thousands of dollars per game, those half-points are really meaningful."
In the two weeks leading up to the Super Bowl earlier this year, oddsmakers said Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski would shift the line a half-point depending on whether he appeared in the game. He played but caught only two passes in the loss to the Giants.
Public perception makes a big difference in a sports betting world built on complex math and opinion markets ? even if popular opinions don't entirely match what's happening on the field.
Statistically, there were few differences from last year in the way the first two weeks of this season were called. The average number of penalties is down and player safety calls like roughing the passer have been about the same. But defensive pass interference calls are up; there were 44 defensive pass interference calls in the first two weeks this year compared with 30 in the first two weeks last year. And games are taking about six minutes longer on average.
Casinos expect an average of 46.1 points scored per game for Week 3 ? the highest projected total ever for Vegas casinos, Bell said.
Bell said the jump can't just be another sign of a pass-happy league with rules designed to foster offense.
"What else has changed other than the referees," he said.
SportsBettingOnline.ag, a Costa Rica company that takes bets online, is taking referee bets directly to fans, allowing them to wager on different kinds of penalties league-wide, including the number of pass interference calls, how long games will last and whether home teams will take fewer penalties than visitors. Online sports gambling is illegal in the United States, and such bets wouldn't likely fly in Las Vegas.
Colbert said Cantor plans to allow bettors to wager for the first time ever on total points for the entire league. The over/under line was set to open Thursday morning at 732.5 points, an average of 45.8 points per game.
Colbert said that while it's high, it's lower than the totals of each of 16 games added up, in part because he thinks some casinos are overreacting to the referees and inflated their numbers.
But he said that might not matter to bettors, who notoriously love high scores.
"My gut instinct is they'll bet over," he said.
