Password scrambler says his program 'no longer safe'

14 hrs.

With?LinkedIn,?eHarmony and Last.fm all investigating password leaks, the author of a popular?password hash?algorithm is urging websites that have more than 50,000 passwords to stop using his program, known as md5crypt.

"The md5crypt password scrambler was created in 1995 by yours truly and was, back then, a sufficiently strong protection for passwords," wrote?Poul-Henning Kamp?in a blog post Thursday. "I consider it no longer safe for any use."

Since 1995, increased computing power means the algorithm is as "prone to brute-force attacks as the DES-based UNIX crypt was back in 1995: Any 8-character password can be found in a couple of days," the Danish software developer wrote.

It appears that such brute-force attacks are what may have happened at the three social sites, and while none of them have gone into details about the incidents, Kamp put out a plea to other?large websites to discard his widely used password algorithm, which he says has outlived its usefulness.

"As the author of md5crypt, I implore everybody to migrate to a stronger password scrambler without undue delay," he wrote.?

Chet Wisniewski, senior security advisor at Sophos, told msnbc.com that MD5, as it's also?called, "has been known to be weak for almost 10 years and should never be used where security is concerned."

Cameron Camp, ESET security researcher, said that MD5 "encryption, and cryptography in general has always been a game of leapfrog, where the complexity of encryption is related to the power of computers used at the time ? get faster computers and you can use/break more complex cryptography."

The "catch," he told msnbc.com, is to "create steadily more robust cryptography that's still usable in a password context on a busy website. If the website software has to spend too much time/resources verifying your password, the system will seem slow to the user. This is especially true when the user may be one of a vast pool of total users, where the system has to search and verify quickly, as in LinkedIn's case."

Camp says by "salting, or adding a few extra characters to the mix as it gets encrypted, it makes decryption much tougher. So now, more advanced cryptography like Blowfish and/or SHA-1 will need to be used to 'raise the bar,' especially when used with salting. And in a few years we will need still more complex cryptography to slow/stop the next generation of password crack attempt."

Paul Kocher, president and chief scientist at Cryptography Research, told msnbc.com?the LinkedIn breach of what may be 6.5 million passwords "was?particularly bad because, when they hashed passwords, the only thing that was included in the hash function input was the password itself. They didn't include anything specific to the particular user."

As a result he said, "it's?possible for an attacker to hash a candidate password, then check whether any user matches the hash. This means that the password cracking process can be run in parallel for all users at once."

LinkedIn, he said, "happened to use SHA-1 for the hashing, but the failure to include an entry-unique value ??a "salt" in crypto-speak?? is independent of the choice of hash function. They also used only a single hashing operation and allowed users to pick weak passwords.? As a result, hackers have been able to recover the majority of the passwords in the compromised LinkedIn password hash file."

In the meantime, while you may not be into cryptography, you can learn more about what to do ??and not do ? when it comes to choosing passwords. Check out Red Tape's "30 dumb passwords people still use."

Racism overshadows start of Euro 2012

By GRAHAM DUNBAR

updated 1:05 p.m. ET June 8, 2012

Before a ball was even kicked, the issue of racism flared up at the European Championship after Netherlands players said Polish spectators made monkey chants at them during a training session.

The Dutch federation didn't file a complaint to UEFA but European football's governing body said on Friday it had been informed there were "isolated incidents of racist chanting" and that it will take action if there is a repeat of such abuse.

"We heard it because we were jogging right by the stands," team captain Mark van Bommel said of the incident. He said he was happy training switched to the other side of the Krakow training ground in southern Poland.

The chanting was not widespread since coach Bert van Marwijk said he failed to hear anything untoward, only lots of noise which made him switch to the other side.

Even though the information only leaked out a day late - and was initially denied by Dutch officials - it was back on the agenda at the team's news conference ahead of the opening Group B game between the Netherlands and Denmark on Saturday.

Van Marwijk sought to play down the controversy, saying: "I'm trying to be as nice possible."

There was comment too from retired Netherlands great Ruud Gullit, who is black.

"It is sad that we have to talk about this - we don't need this," Gullit said Friday at the Polish foreign ministry, where he was helping to launch a UEFA-backed campaign to combat discrimination at the eight Euro 2012 stadiums.

The ongoing threat of racism has been a key issue since the tournament was awarded to co-hosts Poland and Ukraine in 2007.

There was a party atmosphere in Warsaw ahead of the opening match, between Poland and Greece. But while UEFA attempted to play down the controversy on Friday, the debate has persisted despite claims by Polish and Ukrainian governments that racism was being confronted.

"The two countries have worked very hard to organize this tournament and we should not disturb this because 10 people are chanting in a stadium," said UEFA media director Alexandre Fourtoy.

Van Bommel said the chants came from one end of the stadium in Krakow as the Dutch squad trained Wednesday in front of about 25,000 spectators before leaving to face Denmark at Kharkiv, Ukraine. Such was the disgust among players that they moved to the other side of the pitch.

"We will not accept that one of us is confronted with monkey chants," Van Bommel told Friday's edition of De Telegraaf. "We will point it out to the referee and if such chants are heard again we will ask him to intervene."

Ibrahim Afellay, a winger of Moroccan descent, was also quoted Friday as saying that members of the Dutch squad were taunted.

The incidents came only hours after the team, which for decades has been a reflection of the multicultural makeup of the nation, had made solemn and emotional visits to the former Auschwitz-Birkenau death camps close to Krakow.

The southern city was overlooked by Poland's football federation as one of its four cities hosting matches at the Euros.

"I don't think that if you are frustrated about not having the tournament in your city, you do it (complain) in this way," said Gullit, who captained the Netherlands to the 1988 title.

Insisting there was still no evidence to prove that the racist abuse actually occurred, Fourtoy said UEFA will consider stewarding open training sessions.

"We are more worried that this incident could be given disproportionate importance," he said. "I think it's unfair for Poland and Ukraine to be considered racist countries - South Africa in the 1980s was a racist country."

A recent British television documentary, entitled "Stadiums of Hate," fueled concerns about fans' behavior at club matches. The program was shown in Poland earlier this week and the issue dominated questions at the first news conference of UEFA President Michel Platini at the tournament.

Platini promised that referees will stop matches if players suffer racist abuse. But he also warned players they would be shown a yellow card if they broke football's rules and acted alone by walking off the field.

"UEFA has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to discriminatory behavior and has given the power to referees to stop matches in case of any repeated racist behavior," UEFA said Friday.

UEFA's top administrator, Gianni Infantino, later suggested that its independent judicial bodies had scope to rescind yellow cards in some cases.

The sole black player on the Czech Republic's team, Theodor Gebre Selassie, said he hoped racism wouldn't happen.

"We don't know yet what the situation will be like at the stadiums," he said, adding that he would not walk off the field. "I'm not ready to give up. I definitely won't leave. I'll stay until they throw stones at me."

(AP) ? The Nasdaq stock exchange tried to make amends with investors ensnared by technical problems on the day Facebook went public.

But the apology was not universally accepted.

Nasdaq said Wednesday afternoon that it would hand out $40 million in cash and credit to reimburse investment firms that lost money on Facebook's opening day because of computer glitches at the exchange.

Nasdaq's chief rival, the New York Stock Exchange, fired off a statement condemning the move, saying Nasdaq was giving itself an unfair advantage and rewarding itself for its own mistakes.

One broker, Knight Capital, said the planned reimbursements weren't nearly enough, encapsulating the complaints that other brokers and investment firms were making privately.

Facebook went public May 18 amid great fanfare, but computer glitches at the Nasdaq threw the day into chaos. The opening was delayed by half an hour. Technical problems kept many investors from buying shares in the morning, selling them later in the day, or even from knowing whether their orders went through. Some investors complained that they were left holding shares they didn't want.

Nasdaq will pay about $14 million in cash to investment companies that bought or sold shares, or tried to, at certain levels. The rest will be given as credit, meaning the firms won't have to pay as much in the usual fees required for trading on the Nasdaq. Nasdaq predicted that those benefits could last as long as six months.

The credit for trading fees riled the NYSE. It said the move gave investors a strong incentive to move more of their trading to the Nasdaq, allowing Nasdaq "to reap a benefit from market share gains they would not have otherwise received."

"This is tantamount to forcing the industry to subsidize Nasdaq's missteps and would establish a harmful precedent that could have far reaching implications for the markets, investors and the public interest," the NYSE said in a statement.

The war of words underscores the constant battle that Nasdaq and the NYSE are locked in. The NYSE, with roots dating to the 18th century and its familiar neoclassic headquarters on Wall Street, bills itself as reliable and well-known. Nasdaq, which started in 1971, promotes itself as a high-tech exchange favored by high-tech companies including Apple and Google.

The $40 million amount is far more than usual: Nasdaq has traditionally imposed a $3 million cap for reimbursing customers who lost money because of technical problems.

It's hard to imagine that the amount could cover all the claims. Knight Capital alone has estimated that it lost as much as $35 million because of Nasdaq's glitches.

Knight Capital said it was disappointed that the reimbursement pool "does not come close to covering reported losses" connected to the technical glitches.

"Their proposed solution to this problem is simply unacceptable," the company said in a statement.

It isn't clear what will happen next. Nasdaq still has to get approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission for its plan. The NYSE said it would "strongly press our views" but didn't give details. Knight Capital said it is "evaluating all remedies available under law," which could mean it plans to sue.

Facebook's stock originally priced at $38 and closed that first day at $38.23, a disappointment to speculators who had hoped for a first-day pop. Nasdaq has said it was embarrassed by the glitches, but that they didn't contribute to the underwhelming returns.

Nasdaq says it will reimburse investment firms that tried to sell shares at $42 or less but either couldn't sell or sold at a lower price than they intended. It will also reimburse investment firms that bought at $42 but in trades that weren't immediately confirmed. FINRA, the financial industry's self-regulatory group, will review the claims for compensation. Facebook's shares went as high as $45 on the first day.

The shares rose after the Nasdaq announcement and closed up 94 cents, nearly 4 percent, at $26.81. That's still down nearly 30 percent from the initial pricing.

The Facebook offering has left a bad taste for many investors, though they don't blame Nasdaq alone. Many also think that Facebook as well as Morgan Stanley, the main bank that underwrote the deal, overestimated demand, pricing the shares too high and issuing too many.

Nasdaq says the problems have been fixed and that it has hired IBM to review its operating systems.

Google Maps go off-road and offline

22 hrs.

Many of us rely on Google Maps to find our way around, but the service doesn't help us much once we leave the roads or our Internet connections. That's about to change?? and everything's getting more accurate, too, according to the search giant.

During a press event in San Francisco, Wednesday,?Brian McClendon?? Vice President of Engineering for Google Maps?? discussed how the service will let us go off-road, thanks to something called?Street View Trekker.

Trekker is a way for Google to go into places where the traditional Street View cars can't. All the gear necessary for Google staff to photograph the spots only accessible by foot fits into a backpack. This means that Street View will soon let you explore ski slopes, canyons, and more.?

McClendon also focused on how the company is working to keep?Google Maps up-to-date and?accurate. As the world is constantly changing?? we're constantly constructing something new, after all?? this is a "never?ending job," says McClendon.

Google regularly cross-checks its maps, according to McClendon. This allows the company to ?significantly update its data. Feedback from users who report problems and changes via Google's Map Maker tool helps, too.

That's fine and dandy, but what good are these snazzy maps when you can't access them without a data connection?

Well, that concern will soon?be moot. Google is going to launch offline Google Maps for Android in the next few weeks. This means that you'll be able to use Google Maps even if you are on the subway or in another spot that lacks Internet connectivity. All you have to do is select the regions you need to explore while offline and download them. Google will show you how much space you'll need to save the relevant files.

The Google press conference preempts?Apple's?annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC)?keynote on June 11, when it's expected the iPhone maker will announce its own map application.?According to BGR's Jonathan Geller, iOS 6 ? the next version of Apple's mobile operating system ??will bring 3-D mapping features which use?mapping technology developed by Apple.?

No word on whether Phone users will get to enjoy an?similar feature to the updates Google announced for Android, though that may not be a concern if the reports of Apple ditching Google Maps are true.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Finding the best of asbestos consultants

There are certain services that require the employment of specialists. One of such task is an asbestos survey. There are several buildings that belong to the pre WWII era and most of them made extensive use of asbestos in their construction. While at that time the dangers of the substance were not really known, today the range of illnesses that one can contract from over exposure are plenty. That is why it is now legally necessary that old buildings that are being occupied have regular asbestos surveys conducted.

If you are looking for some fantastic asbestos consultants, then you have to understand that their specialized services come at a price. These people are trained to look for asbestos and assess it to ascertain the kind of damage they can cause. In some cases the asbestos can be removed and in other cases it is an integral part of the construction and will have to remain in place.

There are however treatments that have to be given and regular checks kept on its disintegration. Should you be in a legal tangle because of asbestos present in your building, these specialists can also come forward with their expert opinion to help make a better case for you.

Since asbestos has been banned from years now, the need for such consultants is high to determine whether the material is present in a building or not. You can ask neighboring businesses for a recommendation or you could approach the local best business organization who will give you government approved surveyors. Usually the surveys are conducted on an off day so that the consultants can freely move around the premises and open any part that they feel needs looking into. They will determine how much of asbestos is present and what needs to be done to treat it. You will be given a list of ways in which treatments can be given and how you are to keep track of its progress.

It would be a good idea to have the asbestos looked at each year so that you can ascertain how safe it is and whether you are within legal parameters. Maintaining detailed records of how you have managed the asbestos will help you in case of future surveys and any legal proceedings that may be conducted. Finding a surveyor based close to your office premises would help to a large extent as you can call on them in times of emergencies if needed.

JDI debuts 23inch display with 651ppi pixel density

Well, it looks like LG's Retina-beating 5-inch display with a 1080p resolution isn't the only screen setting some new pixel density records at the SID conference this week. Japan Display Inc. has now also announced a new 1,280 x 800 display with an amazing pixel density of 651ppi. If you're able to do the math, though, you'll realize that means the display itself measures just 2.3 inches. While it's not clear exactly what sort of devices JDI has in mind for the screen, the company says it's able to produce photographic-level images and text that is perceptibly sharper than even today's highest-resolution displays -- hopefully we'll be able to judge that for ourselves sooner rather than later.

Trevor MacDonald: In the Family Bed, More Pets Than Babies?

One of the basic principles of attachment parenting is "safe sleep," meaning that a loving parent attends to his or her child's emotional and physical needs at night as well as during the day. Many attachment-minded families find that sleeping together with their baby is the best way to accomplish this. However, the majority of American parents choose to put their children in cribs in separate rooms at night. A surprising number of pet owners, on the other hand, allow their dogs and cats to sleep with them and report that they, and their animals, enjoy it. It's a dog's life -- just not for babies.

I believe the very first time I considered co-sleeping of any kind, I was thinking of dogs. When I was ten, we brought home a new puppy. Mom locked her downstairs in the mudroom and put down newspaper in case she peed. We went to our beds (separate ones) that night to the sound of ceaseless crying and yelping. Mom explained that the puppy was used to sleeping with her litter mates and that she was lonely. This was the first of many times that I begged to be allowed to have our dog sleep with me in my room. I was told the puppy would get used to her new surroundings eventually, and that we had to leave her on her own. This was a normal part of growing up for every dog.

As an adult, I learned that dog trainers seem to agree that sleeping together (at least in the same room) is important for bonding with one's animal, and the practice is far from rare. As Cesar Milan, the "Dog Whisperer," notes, "It is perfectly natural for a dog to sleep with other pack members, and it is also a powerful way to bond with your dog." A 2007 survey by the American Pet Products Association of over 2,500 American pet owners found that a whopping 62% of small dogs, 41% of medium-sized dogs, and 32% of large dogs sleep in bed with their owners. In addition, 62% of cats sleep with their adult owners plus 13% sleep with children. When I adopted my current dog, she wanted to sleep with me and I obliged. This was the first time in my life that I slept with another living creature. I loved it.

After I read about safe infant-parent bed-sharing, it seemed natural to me to sleep with our baby, Jacob, too. What else would we do? Let our dog cuddle with us in bed while our infant cried in the other room? If sleeping together is so beneficial for bonding with a pet, why wouldn't it be great for bonding with baby, too? However, a survey conducted from 1991 to 1999 by the National Centre for Health Statistics found that only 25% of infants always or almost always sleep with their parents and 42% do sometimes. Is it possible that Americans are emotionally better in tune with their pets than their babies?

New articles occasionally warn both pet owners and parents against bed-sharing. There is a rare but real risk of catching a disease by sleeping with a pet. For parents, the fear is rolling over on a baby, but in all cited cases I've come across, risk factors such as smoking, drinking or drug use were involved.

I wanted to do anything and everything that could be helpful to the breastfeeding relationship, including sharing a bed. What we discovered, however, is that co-sleeping is just as important for my partner Ian's relationship with Jacob as it is for mine. I am fortunate to spend hours and hours nursing and wearing our baby during the day, since I am the one who gets to stay home from work. Someone once asked Ian if he is jealous of our breastfeeding relationship, and he responded with an emphatic "No! I get to co-sleep!" Every night, all three of us cuddle together. Especially when he was younger and easier to move around in his sleep, I'd nurse Jacob down and then slide him over to Ian who would tuck his arm around him without even waking up. This way Ian got his fair share of skin-to-skin time and felt well-connected to our baby.

Nowadays our dog frequently snoozes by herself on the couch (maybe because the baby wakes up so much at night!) and then joins us for snuggling in the morning. But if there's a thunder storm, she always ends up in our bed, and from time to time, she chooses to be with us from the start of the night. I have no doubt that Jacob's nighttime preferences will change, too, as he grows and develops. One thing is for certain though: our bed will always be open to whoever needs it.

'Push Girls' proves reality can be important TV

Sundance Channel

The women of "Push Girls" from left, Mia Schaikewitz, Angela Rockwood, Auti Angel and Tiphany Adams.

By Courtney Hazlett

When it comes to television docuseries and reality shows, it seems like every culture and microculture has had time in the spotlight. Polygamist families? Check. Gypsies about to marry? Check. Little people working to save pit bulls? Check. Beautiful women in wheelchairs? Now you can check that box too. But put an asterisk next to it, because ?Push Girls,? the new 14-part series about four paralyzed women, isn?t just a voyeuristic glimpse into life with disability, it?s actually important television.

At its simplest level, the show (which premieres Monday on The Sundance Channel) follows the day-to-day lives of four Los Angeles-based women who use wheelchairs. Of the ladies on the show, Mia Schaikewitz is the only one whose paralysis didn?t occur in a single life-changing moment. Hers happened over the course of about half a day when, at the age of 15, a blood clot ruptured in her spine, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down.

Auti Angel was a professional hip-hop dancer touring with LL Cool J when she was in a car accident that snapped her back in half. There?s also Tiphany Adams, who seems every bit the California girl -- tan, blonde and an unabashed flirt. She was a high-school senior when a car she was riding in with two friends was hit head-on in a 130 mph collision. Like Schaikewitz and Angel, Adams is paralyzed from the waist down. She lives in a house with castmate Angela Rockwood, who was working as a model when she was thrown from the back seat of a car in an accident that resulted in a broken neck and severed spinal cord. At the time, Rockwood was given a 3 percent chance of regaining movement and sensations below her neck.?

All four women knew each other before filming, so this is no ?Real World.? However, viewers get to see the world the women live in and watch them navigate relationships, breakups and the search for everything from jobs to just plain happiness. The wheelchairs are the main difference between ?Push Girls? and other like-minded shows, but when you look a little more closely, the show is accomplishing something else: proving that it is possible to set a new standard for reality-type television.

One way ?Push Girls? does this is by immediately tackling the tough questions, the ones people are thinking but might not want to ask: Can you still have sex if you?re in a wheelchair? Can you have a baby? How do you go to the bathroom? Bathe? ?Push Girls? answers all of these within the span of the first two episodes, and does so honestly and respectfully, never relying on coyness or silliness as a buffer for broaching the difficult stuff. The production might need to be given credit for some of this, but it?s the cast that is the driving force in this accomplishment.

?I don?t beat around the bush. I go in, grab the bush and yank it out,? Rockwood told TODAY.com. ?Ever since I?ve been paralyzed, I?ve had this no nonsense, deal with it, throw everything down on the table attitude.?

It?s that attitude that puts ?Push Girls? in a category apart from other unscripted programming, something that Rockwood recognizes.

?I found myself watching ?Real Housewives of New Jersey? for the first time, and I?m sitting there thinking, ?Are you freaking kidding me? Are you joking? What is this about? All they do is fight?? Half the stuff out there isn?t educating or inspiring,? Rockwood said. ?My mentality is you can go out there and write the book that you want to read. There?s a cure for ignorance: It?s awareness. That's what I?m working toward with this show.?

People will definitely become more aware of the plight of these women after watching "Push Girls," but they?re just as likely to see any of the four women experience something fairly universal, wheelchair or not. Instead of highlighting how we?re so different, ?Push Girls? manages to remind us also how much we?re the same.

Rockwood?s marriage fell apart, and she?s stuck with a mortgage to pay. Angel wonders when she might be ready to have a baby. Schaikewitz wonders if she?s settling for a guy who might not be right for her. This is all pretty basic life stuff, just delivered in a slightly surprising way: You can watch and find yourself having something in common with someone whose life could not be more different than yours.

While the wheelchairs are never a character in their own right (another remarkable achievement), they are ever present and amplify whatever story is being told at the moment. As Adams puts it in the premiere episode, ?I have 26-inch rims on the side of my a--. It?s hard not to get attention.? However, the attention these women will get will ultimately be for delivering a message that might be greater than any of their substantial disabilities.

?Realize what your potential is in the very moment. Go within yourself and know what you?re truly capable of doing. Mind over matter. If you focus positively on a goal, you can completely execute that. Tomorrow is not promised,? Rockwood said. ?That?s the message here for me, what I hope to deliver with this show.????

That?s one big message, and ?Push Girls? delivers it, or at least comes admirably close. Better yet, it does so while creating awareness for those who are wheelchair dependent.

Unscripted programming that doesn?t exploit?and puts some good out into the universe? That?s a pretty rare thing. ?Push Girls? is a show fans of television can be proud to watch.

"Push Girls" premieres on Monday, June 4 at 10 p.m. on Sundance channel.

Spaceships will follow Dragon's trail

SpaceX

SpaceX's scorched Dragon capsule sits on its American Marine recovery ship after being fished out of the Pacific Ocean on Thursday.

By Alan Boyle

SpaceX's scorched Dragon cargo capsule is on a ship making its way back to Los Angeles after Thursday's?historic descent from orbit.

The California-based company reported that the 14.4-foot-high (4.4-meter-high) spacecraft and its more than 1,300 pounds (620 kilograms) of cargo were in good shape, despite its plunge from the International Space Station. On the way down, the Dragon weathered re-entry temperatures in excess of 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit (1,650 degrees Celsius). At a height of 40,000 feet, the Dragon started deploying its parachutes and drifted into the Pacific, about 560 miles west of Baja California. A recovery team got to the craft, towed it to the ship and used a crane to hoist it aboard, as planned.

SpaceX spokeswoman Kirstin Brost Grantham told me that a few items will be delivered to NASA officials with a 48-hour turnaround, as a demonstration of the procedure for returning time-sensitive cargo from orbit. But the Dragon itself and most of its payload will be taking a slower ride to the port of Los Angeles. Arrival is expected around June 6, depending on weather.

From California, the craft and cargo will be trucked to SpaceX's rocket test facility in MacGregor, Texas, for postflight processing. Then the cargo will be turned over to NASA.

The handover of the Dragon's contents will be the last item to check off on NASA's list of requirements. That should clear the way for a $1.6 billion series of 12 Dragon cargo flights, with the first launch probably scheduled sometime in September.

NASA and SpaceX released a slew of awesome pictures and video documenting the Dragon's return, via SpaceX's Zenfolio gallery as well as NASA's Flickr and YouTube accounts. Here's a selection:?

NASA

SpaceX's Dragon cargo craft begins its descent on Thursday after its release by the International Space Station's Canadarm2 robotic arm, visible at top center.

During the re-entry of SpaceX's Dragon capsule, NASA and the United States Navy flew a P-3 Orion Cast Glance aircraft to capture airborne views of the spacecraft's descent. The aircraft, based at the Navy's VX-30 squadron at the Naval Air Station Point Mugu, Calif., was able to record Dragon's re-entry, parachute chute deployment and the capsule in the water.

The Dragon capsule nears American Marine's recovery ship, which is equipped with a crane to take the spacecraft on board.

Eventually, SpaceX is aiming for extensive reusability of its spaceship components, including a first stage that can fly itself back to the launch pad and a "Dragon 2.0" spacecraft that can do propulsive soft landings.

"That's how spaceships land in sci-fi movies," SpaceX's billionaire founder, Elon Musk, told me during a post-splashdown news conference. "And that's what also enables landing in other parts of the solar system. ... It's the way spacecraft ought to land."

But NASA won't be using this particular Dragon again. The space agency is buying a fresh spaceship for each of the 12 cargo supply missions. Musk speculated that SpaceX might send the scarred spacecraft on "a little tour of the country and show it to people around the country, [to] get students excited about space." In the future, Dragons could be refurbished for return trips to space.

Meanwhile, SpaceX is working to make the Dragon suitable for carrying astronauts as well as cargo. The development of the SuperDraco thruster system is a key part of that plan, because it fits into the propulsive-landing strategy as well as the launch escape system that NASA will require for safe human spaceflight. Musk said the system could go into operation in three years if the development effort goes well, "maybe four or five if we encounter some challenges along the way."

Other spaceship companies are making strides as well, with advice and financial support from NASA. Here's a quick progress report:

Orbital Sciences Corp., like SpaceX, has been receiving hundreds of millions of dollars to support the development of an unmanned cargo resupply system. Orbital is developing a new rocket called the Antares as well as its Cygnus cargo capsule to do the job. Last month, Orbital, Aerojet and NASA oversaw a full-duration hot-fire test of the AJ26 engine that will be used on the Antares. The first test launch from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport in Virginia is planned sometime in the next few months, and if all goes according to plan, cargo flights to the space station could begin by early next year under the terms of a $1.9 billion contract.

Blue Origin, the company founded by Amazon.com billionaire Jeff Bezos, is working on a spacecraft that could carry astronauts to the space station, with United Launch Alliance's Atlas 5 rocket to be used as the launch vehicle. On Thursday, Blue Origin reported that it successfully completed a systems requirement review of its orbital Space Vehicle. Blue Origin's president and program manager, Rob Meyerson, said in a statement that the review "paves the way to finalize our Space Vehicle design." Representatives from NASA and the Federal Aviation Administration took part in the review.

The Boeing Co. is developing its CST-100 capsule for NASA's potential use as a taxi for space station astronauts, to be launched by the Atlas 5. The company carried out drop tests in April and May to check the workability of its parachute-plus-airbag landing system. The most recent test involved dropping a CST-100 test vehicle from a helicopter, 14,000 feet above Nevada's Delamar Dry Lake Bed. Boeing's John Mulholland said the test validated the landing system design. Further ground tests of CST-100 components lie ahead, and test flights could begin in 2015-2016, Boeing says.

Video traces a parachute drop test of Boeing's CST-100 space taxi in the Nevada desert.

Sierra Nevada Corp. is developing a mini-shuttle known as the Dream Chaser, to be launched atop an Atlas 5 as a taxi for space station astronauts. This week, Sierra Nevada put the Dream Chaser through its first full-scale, captive-carry flight test. For this test, the space plane was suspended by cables beneath a heavy-lift helicopter. The first free-gliding drop tests are planned for later this year, and Sierra Nevada says the Dream Chaser could be operational by 2016.?

SpaceX, Blue Origin, Boeing and Sierra Nevada, along with other aerospace players such as ATK, Lockheed Martin and Astrium, are expected to compete for further funding from NASA later this year. Which means it's not likely to be a slow summer in the aerospace business. Has the successful Dragon mission made SpaceX the far-and-away frontrunner, or is the commercial space race up in the air? When will U.S. astronauts be flying once again on U.S.-made spaceships? Watch a panel of space commentators, including yours truly, discuss these and other questions?? and feel free to weigh in with your comments below.

Watch space commentators discuss the week's developments, including the return of the Dragon from orbit.

Update for 6:55 p.m. June 2: In a Twitter update, SpaceX confirms that it has delivered some cargo items to NASA in an effort to demonstrate 48-hour rush processing after splashdown. You could call this the first commercial express delivery from outer space.

Don't Tell Me You Want To Earn Money Online But If You Are Trying ...

Oh yeah, people want to be financially independent or even if they could earn an extra income flow they?d be happy. Simply a thousand extra dollars a month can change people?s lives. Just think, an education for your kids, an extra payment for a boat or sports car you?ve always wanted or maybe use the extra grand on a larger home. You see people making tons on line, sure selling these dreamers the products that will make them overnight success stories. Well at least they say they do. Maybe you can win a prize or contest for a house or boat, but you are not going to be an overnight success on the internet. Online businesses can and do thrive every day and make the kind of money to support your dreams but you know what, you still need to follow rules, not your 9-5 normal employee ? boss rules and regulations, that?s for sure.

However, Online Business owners when following internet business rules can thrive today. Yes you can be successful online but I?m telling you, you need to be disciplined. Not in the army way, yes sir, no sir, madam but in sticking to your success plan. Yea, first you need a plan. Your business plan. You can search the web for tips on that. I?m going to list the items you need to be acting on regularly.

1 ? Plan your Workdays. Block out Hours

For your online business to succeed, you will need to market online consistently. Sure you can automate it or even outsource it to someone in a foreign country or even a neighborhood teenager. However, allocating time in your schedule or resources is essential for internet businesses to succeed. To make this work, you can take an hour or two and basically write a to do list for marketing. It can be writing an article, a blog, growing your list, building back links or even twitter and Facebook page building.

2 -There are Many Choices For You

A simple schedule can be made with a ruler or block paper even. Of course an excel spreadsheet or word table may impress. You need your schedule to be functional. A hand drawn calendar with notes may be a hundred times more useful than a leather embossed planner.

3 ? Don?t Waste Time, Stick to Your Plan

Internet advertising websites will have advertising of their own. Of course you may be interested in many ads or even related links, Don?t get distracted, remember it is consistency that will bring the regular paydays you can expect with a little marketing discipline.

4 ? Blocks of Time can even Motivate You

When you have a limited time and the clock is ticking, deadline approaching, many people get extra motivated to get things done. In this way, a time constraint even if it is self imposed is a huge urging on at times to complete your marketing tasks. Having to post links, ads or articles days after days, weeks, even years can seem more like a job at times so look for extra motivating techniques as this to reach your mini goals of blocks of time/

5 ? Diversifying Internet Marketing Is Easier

This last point or advantage of following a schedule for your marketing of websites is to take advantage of this tactic as sort of a checklist too. You will have a record of what marketing you have been doing and simultaneously you will be collecting statistics on traffic, conversion rates and maybe click through from certain techniques whether it be banners, solo ads, organic website visitors or any other generating traffic method used.
