Investing in commercial real estate is a smart choice.? It is also a smart move because you buy Homes for Sale In Denver CO and at the same time earn.? Choosing the right mortgage for your real estate property is an important decision.? How is this possible?

Just like in residential homes, there mortgage loans intended only for commercial properties.? Choosing which type of mortgage loan depends on several factors like the type of property.? For example, investing in apartments means applying for a loan that has low upfront cost and low interest.? And a long term loan with a fixed interest rate should be considered if you are investing in a building and have it rented out later.

Why Apple chose Twitter over Facebook

With the upcoming release of OS X Mountain Lion, Apple will be fully integrating Twitter social sharing across all of their included apps, as well as extending a developer API for 3rd party apps available through the Mac App Store. This follows similar integration in iOS 5 last year and leaves one huge, lingering question: where's the Facebook integration?

Sense 4.0 takes HTC back to a more simple user interface

HTC Sense 4.0

When the first leaks of HTC's new crop of devices started trickling out, a funny thing happened -- folks started to fall in love with HTC Sense all over again. Only this time, it was for what Sense wasn't doing. The on-screen widgets appeared to have been toned down. Gone was the large and inflexible series of buttons at the bottom of the home screens, apparentl replaced by a more traditional-looking launcher.

This is the new Sense 4.0.

Oh, there's no doubt you're using an HTC device when you look at Sense 4.0. But it's obvious the company was looking to pare things back a bit. And HTC told us as much directly, saying that it listened to customer feedback and that folks -- that's people like you and me -- said they wanted a more subued user interface.

And so while there's still very much a strong HTC influence over the Sense 4.0 phones -- you can't expect HTC to go completely stock, and nor would we want them to -- HTC made a conscious effort to give some of the power back, going with a less-is-more approach. Ice Cream Sandwich notifications work like Ice Cream Sandwich notifications. You get a more traditional dock. You get more customability. Icons rotate into landscape mode, as they should. (Hey, even HTC gets a little customization and flexibility back in this deal. HTC's excellent lockscreen with quick-launch icons remains, and we're glad to see it, as it's one of the best lockscreens we've ever used.

We'll be giving Sense 4.0 a more thorough look in the weeks ahead. But so far, we're very much liking what we're seeing.

Q&A: Screenwriter Chris McCoy, Part 5 | Go Into The Story

Chris McCoy is pretty unique among screenwriters in that he has three scripts that have made the Black List: ?Get Back? (2007), ?Good Looking? (2009), and ?Good Kids? (2011). That alone is enough to warrant significant curiosity about this young writer. The fact his screenplays are highly entertaining, distinctive, and filled with quirky characters and strong dialogue makes it even more so. Therefore I was quite happy when Chris agreed to do a GITS Q&A.

In this 5-part series, which will run today through Friday, we cover Chris? background as a writer, reflections about each of his Black List scripts, and his insight into the craft of screenwriting.

A few craft questions. Are you one of those writers who works out your story before you start writing it or do you prefer to type FADE in and see where that takes you? If you do spend a lot of time in prep, could you describe how you approach that process?

If I?m writing a spec, my outline is looser than it would be if I was writing an assignment. Because you have to pitch to get studio jobs, it means that you?ve extensively worked out the beats of what you?re going to do, so you?ve got this long, in-depth document to use as a reference.

But if I?m just at home fiddling around with an idea, I like giving myself some room to explore. What I typically do is have an outline with the big plot points ? the inciting event, where we?ll be at the end of the first act, some of the second act rising action beats, the impossible situation at the end of the second act and what the climax will look like.

And then I try to find the most creative path between those big moments. My feeling is that if I can surprise myself when I?m connecting these dots, then hopefully I?ll surprise the reader. If I?m just putting words on the page, I?ll always have a couple of weird ideas that pop into my head that I probably wouldn?t have gotten had I just been putting index cards up on a wall.

You write such interesting, unique characters. What are the key aspects of your character development process (e.g., questionnaires, biographies, interviews, monologues)?

If I?m creating a character from scratch, I?ll usually start by thinking about people I know, or I?ll use some version of myself, mining my own fears and neuroses and building outwards from there. I?ve never really been somebody who writes with an actor in mind, because my feeling is it?s better to create someone on the page who an actor can inhabit. Plus, chances are you?re not going to get the actor you want anyway.

Before I start writing, I create character profiles that I?ll refer back to throughout the process, describing what the character wants, what the character does for a living, what he or she looks like, and so forth.

After I construct these basic bones, I?ll start fleshing them out with more unique personality traits, which can come from anywhere ? something you noticed in somebody on the street, something you read about in a magazine. I collect books of anecdotes and miscellanea, which always seem to give me a lot of character ideas. I also live in Venice Beach, which is essentially an open-air lunatic asylum, so there?s no shortage of interesting people around.

Once I?ve come up with a rough sketch of the characters, I?ll write out what their relationships are to each other, and how they?ll complicate each other?s lives. Once I have those dynamics figured out, I?ll start writing, and that?s when the character will invariably offer up more information who they are.

While most of the humor in your stories arises from situations, you also write entertaining and funny dialogue. Is that just an innate talent or have you had to work on this area of the craft? If the latter, what tips do you have about how to develop one?s ability to write good dialogue?

I think that good dialogue comes from character development ? the better you know your character, the more specific the dialogue is going to feel.

How do you go about the process of plotting a story? Are there any specific structural paradigms or theories you rely on when you write?

The theory I always end up coming back to is Kurt Vonnegut?s Eight Rules of Writing Fiction, which I?ve had up on my wall in front of my computer for years.

The idea I mentioned earlier about writing to please just one person is in those rules, as are other gems: ?Start as close to the end as possible?? ?Be a sadist. Now matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them ? in order that the reader may see what they are made of?? And so forth. They?re really useful.

What?s your take on the idea of ?theme?? How important are story themes to you when developing and writing a script?

A story theme is tremendously important, because it?s what you?re trying to say with the work as a whole. If there?s no theme, there?s nothing holding the script together.

What do you like about screenwriting?

I love that there is a technical aspect to it ? you have to learn structure and how to set up reversals and how to build towards this hopeless moment at the end of the second act where you have no idea how the protagonist is going to get out of the mess he finds himself in. But once you understand structure, you can start playing with it. It?s a little bit like being a tradesman ? if you?re a blacksmith, you have to learn how to build a blade before you can get creative with the hilt. (Obviously, I?m using this reference because I?ve been in a Game of Thrones hole recently).

I love writing dialogue. I love figuring out how the puzzle of a story goes together. I feel grateful that I get to tell stories for a living, and I hope that I have the chance to keep doing it.

What do you hate about screenwriting?

I hate that once you hand your work over to a producer or a studio, your fate is in their hands.

I hate that my parents have no idea what to tell their friends I do for a living at cocktail parties.

More than anything, I hate when Final Draft does that thing where it screws up dialogue being carried over from one page to the next, and then the lines suddenly disappear, and I have to minimize the window to get them to come back.

One last question: What is the single best piece of advice you can give to aspiring screenwriters?

I?d just say it?s important to actually finish your scripts, instead of perpetually tinkering with them. It?s hard to consider something done and show it to people, but the thing about being a screenwriter is that it?s never done. Whatever you?re working on, you?ll have to do fifty more drafts. But you can?t move forward with your career if nobody ever sees what you?re writing. It?s a long road, so you need to keep writing and getting material out there. You never know what?s going to pop.

Now everyone head to comments and thank Chris for taking the time for this interview. While you?re there, wish him the best of luck. It?s creative juju for him? and good karma for you!

'This ... never entered my body'

Some notes and quotes from Ryan Braun?s press conference this afternoon:

? He thanked fans who ?withheld judgements as I respected the confidentially of this case.?

? ?I tried to respect this process even though the confidentially was breached early on.?

? ?If I had done this intentionally or unintentionally I?d have been the first one to admit it. I truly believe this substance never entered my body.?

? ?It hasn?t been easy. Lots of times I wanted to come out and tell the entire story, attack everybody like I?ve been attacked. My name was dragged through the mud. But at the end of the day I recognized what was best for the game of baseball.?

? ?I truly believe that everything in life happens for a reason and I learned a long time ago to stop questioning what goes on in life. I?ve yet to understand the reason for this, but I don?t question that.?

? ?Today is for anyone who has been wrongly accused and everyone who stood up for what?s right. It?s about future players and the game of baseball.?

? ?Never been a personal medical issue, never had an STD. Many of the erroneous stories reported by the network continue to live on, which is disappointing.?

? ?I will continue to take the high road. We won because the truth was on my side. I was a victim of a process that completely broke down and failed as it was applied to me in this case. Today?s about making sure this never happens to anyone else who plays this game.?

? ?The system as it was applied to me in this case was fatally flawed.?

? Braun revealed that he was first made aware of test result on October 19, which was during the playoffs.

? ?At the end of the day, I know the truth. My friends, family, teammates, and the Brewers organization know the truth.?

? ?We spoke to biochemists and scients, and asked them how difficult it would be for someone to taint the sample. They said, if they were motivated, it would be extremely easy.?

? ?Ultimately, as I sit here today, the system worked because I was innocent and I was able to prove my innocence.?

? Braun is ?considering all my legal options.?

Obama administration seeks online privacy rules

(AP) ? The Obama administration is calling for stronger privacy protections for consumers as mobile gadgets, Internet services and other tools are able to do a better job of tracking what you do and where you go.

Consumer and privacy groups welcomed the effort, though some worried that it won't do enough.

Administration officials outlined a proposed "Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights" on Thursday and urged technology companies, consumer groups and others to jointly craft new protections. Such guidelines will initially be voluntary for companies, but those that agree to abide by them could be subject to sanctions for any violations.

"As the Internet evolves, consumer trust is essential for the continued growth of the digital economy," President Barack Obama said in a statement. "That's why an online privacy Bill of Rights is so important. For businesses to succeed online, consumers must feel secure."

The effort comes as companies have found more sophisticated ways to collect and combine data on your interests and habits. Beginning next week, for instance, Google will start merging data it collects from email, video, social-networking and other services when you're signed in with a Google account.

The growing use of smartphones and tablet computers adds another dimension to the tracking. Location information can give service providers such as Facebook insights into where you spend your time and, if you have friends who use the same services, whom you tend to hang out with in person.

Data collection can help companies improve and personalize services. It can also help advertisers fine-tune messages and reach the people most likely to buy their products and services, often without consumers even realizing it.

That is why the administration is seeking more data protections for consumers in a report issued Thursday.

How strong the protections will be ultimately depends on what rules the different parties involved can agree on. Because legislation to enable traditional regulation would take time, the administration favored an approach that combined input from private companies, advocacy groups, regulators and other parties.

Consumer Watchdog, a nonprofit research and advocacy group in California, said the approach will work only if influential companies don't water down the rules to render them meaningless.

"I am skeptical about the 'multi-stakeholder process,' but am willing to make a good-faith effort to try," said John M. Simpson, the group's privacy project director. He's referring to the various parties with competing interests tasked with making the rules.

Last week, the Federal Trade Commission complained that software companies producing games and other mobile applications aren't telling parents what personal information is being collected from kids and how companies are using it. Depending on how the guidelines are crafted, companies could be required to more prominently disclose when they collect such things as location, call logs and lists of friends ? not just from kids, but everyone.

The report is not intended to replace other efforts at offering privacy protections.

Apple, Google, Microsoft and other leading companies in mobile computing agreed Wednesday to require that mobile applications seeking to collect personal information warn users before their services are installed. The guidelines came as part of an agreement with California's attorney general.

Separately, the FTC has recommended the creation of a "Do Not Track" tool to let consumers curb advertisers from studying their online activity to target ads. On Thursday, an alliance representing Google, Yahoo, AOL and other leading ad-delivery companies committed to adopting the Do Not Track technology when it is built into Web browsers, something expected this year. The FTC could punish violators.

Commerce Secretary John Bryson said in a briefing with reporters that the administration's proposal not only protects consumers but also gives businesses better guidance on how to meet consumer expectations.

The proposal expands on widely accepted Fair Information Practice Principles crafted in the 1970s, when the Internet was just an experimental network used primarily by researchers. Those existing guidelines say that consumers should be informed about any data collection and given the option to refuse. They should also be allowed to review and correct data about themselves. The principles have provisions for security and enforcement.

Applying the principles to the Internet era, the administration said data collected in one context should not be used for another, while companies should specify any plans for deleting data or sharing information with outside parties, such as advertisers. Companies also need to be mindful of the age and sophistication of consumers. Disclosures need to be presented when and where they are most useful for consumers.

The idea isn't to give people access to everything a company collects about them, but they should at least be able to review and correct any information that is used to make decisions.

The Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration plans to convene companies, privacy advocates, regulators and other parties in the coming months to craft detailed guidelines that reflect those principles. Enforcement will be left to the FTC under existing laws.

The codes of conduct will be specific to particular types of companies. One might cover social networks, for instance, while another might deal with services on mobile gadgets. A company that offers social-networking features on phones might adopt both. New ones could emerge as technology evolves.

Although officials expect many companies will agree to the new codes, allowing them to use that commitment in marketing materials, the report also called on Congress to pass new laws to require remaining companies to adopt such guidelines. Until then, enforcement will be limited to companies that say they would abide by the codes but fail to do so.

The Center for Democracy and Technology, a Washington group that advocates stronger privacy protections, welcomed the voluntary codes as an interim measure, but said legislation ultimately will be needed to fully protect consumers.

Legislation also will be needed for the FTC to give protections to businesses that follow a checklist of good practices. Known as safe harbor, such protections would exempt companies from sanctions if they inadvertently break a code.

The report comes 14 months after the Commerce Department first proposed a privacy bill of rights. The issue was later elevated to the White House and won its endorsement with the release of Thursday's report.

The administration dropped a proposal in the original report to create a federal privacy office within the Commerce Department. Instead, the task of convening parties to craft guidelines is left to the existing National Telecommunications and Information Administration.

Pujols joins Angels in camp

Albert Pujols

By TOM WITHERS

updated 5:43 p.m. ET Feb. 20, 2012

TEMPE, Ariz. - Decked out in Angels' gear from head to toe, Albert Pujols looked like the same slugger whose swing in St. Louis became as symbolic as the Gateway Arch.

With a halo-topped "A" logo on his cap, Pujols, his massive chest and arms filling out every corner of his red shirt, sat behind a microphone and excitedly announced the start of a new stage of his career.

"Here I am," he said.

And here he goes.

Arriving just as the morning sun crept above the horizon, and more than a week earlier than required, Pujols reported to training camp Monday with the Los Angeles Angels, who will pay the three-time NL MVP $240 million over the next 10 years to be the face of their franchise ? and to hopefully bring them several World Series titles.

"I'm just really excited to be here, it feels good to be outside," Pujols said during a news conference held at a nearby luxury hotel. "I've been training for three months, hitting in a cage in St. Louis, and it feels good to be here for some spring baseball."

Although only the Angels' pitchers and catchers had to be at camp this early, Pujols wanted to be there from Day One as well. That's how the 32-year-old has done it since breaking into the big leagues in 2001 and he wasn't about to change his routine.

He also felt it was important to begin bonding with his new teammates, some of whom were caught staring at him from across the clubhouse.

Driving a black Mercedes still tagged with Missouri license plates, Pujols pulled into the players' parking lot at 7:15 a.m. There were only a handful of fans waiting to catch a glimpse of the nine-time All-Star, who helped lead the Cardinals to a championship last season before leaving the only baseball home he had known.

Pujols stopped in the equipment room and shook a few hands before heading to the clubhouse, where his locker is flanked by veterans Bobby Abreu and Torii Hunter.

"The guys are awesome," Pujols said. "They well-received me as soon as I walked in there."

Shortly after dressing, Pujols made an early request to one of the team's media relations members.

"Let me take a peak of the ballpark," he said before walking out a side door for his first look at Tempe Diablo Stadium, the Angels' spring home, which is sure to be packed with fans throughout March.

It didn't take long for Pujols to feel like he was part of the club.

During manager Mike Scioscia's first team meeting, Pujols' cellphone rang, earning the superstar his first petty fine, which according to a team official, will require him to buy his skipper lunch.

No major league manager had a more productive offseason than Scioscia. Angels owner Arte Moreno spent $320 million in signing Pujols, left-hander C.J. Wilson (5 years, $77.5 million) and reliever LaTroy Hawkins (1 year, $3 million).

Scioscia, entering his 13th season with the Angels, will have the luxury every game of penciling Pujols' name onto his lineup card in the No. 3 spot and at first base.

"His whole game, not only being a presence hitting in the middle of the lineup, running the bases. He's an offensive machine," Scioscia said. "He's a special player and special players are usually multidimensional, and Albert is."

Scioscia said unless there's a need because of injury he has no plans to use Pujols at third, where the Cardinals had him for seven games last season.

After taking some swings in an indoor cage, Pujols was driven in a golf cart to one of the back fields on the team's minor league complex. With over 100 fans doing everything possible to get a close look from behind the right-field fence, Pujols fielded some grounders before taking his first outdoor batting-practice cuts of the spring.

With Moreno, trainers, coaches and instructors watching, Pujols ripped a few fastballs from hitting coach Mickey Hatcher for line drives and then launched a deep shot over the fence in left, the ball slicing between two giant palm trees and disappearing into the brush.

"It's too early for that," a smiling Hatcher yelled as Pujols switched spots with Kendrys Morales, who will likely bat in the cleanup spot behind him.

Jumping to a new league and facing unfamiliar pitchers might unnerve some players. Not Pujols. He intends to dig into the batter's box the same as always, square up a fastball the way he has for years and pad statistics that are likely to grace his plaque in Cooperstown.

"The game doesn't change," he said. "When I got into the big leagues in 2001, I didn't know anybody, so that's how I'm going to take it. It's a different league, but in 2001 I didn't know any pitchers around the league. It's going to be a little different, but when it comes to playing the game, nothing has changed except that we have a DH in the American League."

Pujols has joined a new team, new league and new city, but he will always have fond memories of his years with the Cardinals.

"You know what, I had a great time in St. Louis," he said. "Obviously, 11 years, you don't just flip the page and move on. There were some great moments. I was able to accomplish two World Series and that experience is something I want to bring to this city, to Anaheim, to this ballclub and have hopefully better seasons than I had in St. Louis and hopefully more championships."

Pujols said he's fine physically and dismissed the idea that a wrist injury that nagged him early last season lingers.

"Just look at my numbers after the wrist injury," he said. "It doesn't bother me at all."

And neither does his decision to leave St. Louis, right after the Cardinals won the championship.

There was a point where it looked as if Pujols might stay with the Cardinals, and be that rare player in the era of free agency to spend his entire career with one team. However, the second-largest contract in baseball history along with the chance to prolong his career as a DH and an additional 10-year personal services contract with the Angels was too much to resist.

It was time for him to go.

Pujols is pushing on.

"I can't go back and feel sorry," he said. "It's time to move forward. It's like another chapter in my life and it's time to open a new one. I don't' want to go look over my shoulder and regret the decisions I made. It was the best for me and my family "

Budget Auto insurace and Direct Car Insurance ? 10 Pieces you ...

Getting car coverage online from budget car coverage companies is being more and more popular, for its competitive price, convenience in getting quotes and applying online directly. Having car coverage is significant for many automobile owners and drivers, the incentive in possessing a relatively cheaper price from direct chicago car insurance companies thus have attracted huge audience.

Yet, you can wonder why these direct insurers can offer a reduced quote compared to other insurance providers, or if they would be capable of provide sufficient insurance, etc?

Allow me to share the top 10 that a person should be aware before putting for an inexpensive car insurance online.

1. Know when the Company is Valid
This is actually the most important thing that you should know ? whether the company is legitimate or do not ? before you apply for anywhere between them. Busia's Perspective on African Society and Culture | Ghanamma.com

|

Following his deliberate political stampeding out of Ghana by the Nkrumah-led Convention People?s Party (CPP), in the run-up to the 1960 Presidential Election, aimed primarily at rubberstamping Nkrumah?s dictatorship under the guise of an Executive Presidency, the future Prime Minister K. A. Busia, then leader of the main opposition United Party (UP) in parliament, secured an appointment to an endowed chair at the African Studies Center at the world-famous University of Leiden, in the Netherlands. In his inaugural address as ?Professor of the Sociology and Culture of Africa,? twentieth-century Africa?s foremost social scientist reiterated Dag Hammerskjold?s perspicuous observation that Africa?s centrality to the crossroads world of the 1960s could not be ignored by the United Nations Organization of which Mr. Hammerskjold was the secretary-general: ?We are at a turn of the road where our attitude will be of decisive significance, I believe, not only for the future of this organization, but also for the future of Africa. And Africa may well in present circumstances mean the world? (See K. A. Busia, The Sociology and Culture of Africa: Its Nature and Scope, University Press of Leiden, 1960. Print. 3).

Contrary to cynical attempts by his most ardent detractors to demonize the late and former Ghanaian leader, as one who was neocolonialist and parochially divisive in the pursuit of his ideological agenda, Busia demonstrates an acute and pragmatic appreciation vis-?-vis the organic unity of the primeval continent, even while also significantly admitting of its unique ethnic, cultural and racial diversity. To the foregoing effect, the inaugural address presenter observes: ?There are some experts who deny the possibility of dealing with Africa as a whole in any context whatsoever, because of its size, and of the variety of tribes and peoples, governments and cultures found in Africa. ? It is indeed a large Continent, covering 11,700,000 square miles, 40% larger than the [erstwhile] Soviet Union, and more than three times the size of the United States, including Alaska. For its size, its estimated 280 million [people, in 1960] is sparse, in comparison with the population densities of other Continents; but Africa claims more distinct peoples and cultures than any other Continent. ? Since the end of the Paleolithic period, Africa has been inhabited by five races: Bushmanoid, Caucasoid, Mongoloid, Negroid and Pygmoid. These races are classified on the basis of a combination of inheritable physical traits; they all belong to the one species, Homo Sapiens, which includes all the peoples of the world. There is no scientific basis for the belief that some races are inferior, and some superior. Man represents only one animal species? (3-4).

And unlike the so-called Afrocentrists and their programmatically allied Nkrumaist ideologues, Busia envisaged the universally discredited policy of Apartheid in South Africa as an axiological norm that was prevalent all over the world, in practice, particularly in Europe, rather than an anomaly, or one that was rigidly and dually bifurcated into black and white. To this end, the author observes: ?This needs emphasizing in relation to African Studies. The doctrine of racial inequality is by no means confined to the policy of apartheid in South Africa, but is implied in policies and practices in other countries too. It rests on the assumption that there is an inherent difference in the capacity of racial groups for the creation, learning or adaptation to culture. This would make Kipling?s: ?East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet? applicable to Culture? (4).

Rather, the Oxbridge-educated scholar debunks the myth of racial and ethnic supremacy by discursively expatiating on the subject as follows: ?Sociological studies have shown that there is no scientific support for this. In fact, the processes of acculturation in Africa show that moral, political and technical potentialities are not biologically determined. There are differences in culture between racial and even ethnic groups in Africa, but they can be accounted for by differences in experience, for biological capacity is moulded by the opportunities provided by the cultural and social environment. But there are political policies which aim at ensuring and perpetuating cultural differences by denying Africans opportunities for participating fully in the total cultural environment, and so learning and adapting themselves to it. Yet an important contribution of cultural anthropology and sociology to race relations is the general agreement on the finding that culture is learnt, and that given adequate opportunity, an individual or racial group can learn and master new cultural patterns. This gives ground for optimism. Even for the most acute racial tensions in Africa, it offers the hope that the Western cultural heritage can be mastered by Africans, and that the different racial groups living in multiracial societies, such as in the Rhodesias [present-day Zambia and Zimbabwe] or in the Union of South Africa, can all participate in their common cultural environment. Sociological studies of acculturation, of the processes of contact and intermixture of the traits and patterns of different cultures, thus assume importance in tackling the practical problems of race relations in Africa? (4-5).

In other words, Busia was definitely far ahead of his Nkrumaist detractors in perspicuously recognizing the imperative need for Africans to systematically and progressively cultivate what Americans have come to recognize as the ?melting pot? of socio-cultural and multiethnic and multiracial synergy as a means of healthily expediting the modernization and technological development of postcolonial Africa. Outside of southern Africa, where European settler presence was much more limited, Busia, implicitly, recognized synergistic cultural organicity in terms of globalization or ?global villagization,? in the prophetic observation of the immortalized Canadian media theorist Marshall McLuhan.

Furthermore, for Busia, the kind of geopolitically expedient nationalism advocated by President Nkrumah, for example, had no factual basis in historical reality; for Africa?s centrality as a primeval cauldron of global human civilization necessitated the synergistic propulsion of human development in the contemporary era. This organic and expansive trend in thinking may very much have informed the Ghanaian leader-scholar?s more pragmatic and conciliatory attitude towards the odious and erstwhile apartheid regimes in southern Africa: ?The cultures of Africa are not easy to classify in as distinct categories as the languages. Africa is probably the cradle of mankind. Every year, fresh archeological evidence shows it to have been the first home of man, from the very dawn of cultural history. It is claimed that Dr. Leakey?s Zinjanthropus, or East Africa Man, found in the Olduvai Gorge, was the world?s earliest man, and lived more than 600,000 years ago. The first achievement of a Neolithic agricultural civilization in Africa goes back 7,000 years. Different races have thus lived and interacted in Africa for thousands of years, and survivals of extremely old cultural inventions and ways of life appear alongside much more recent cultural developments? (5).

Even so, Busia is empirically realistic enough to also observe that such seminal technological and cultural achievements, as pioneered on the African continent, were by no means hermetic or devoid of valuable and even significant foreign contributions: ?Through Egypt, Ethiopia and North Africa came influences of the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean; through Madagascar, the ancient cultures of Asia; and in modern times, the violent impact of European cultures has been felt everywhere in Africa? (5).

In the field of religion, the great social thinker and theorist is of the firm belief that the African is as articulate and philosophical in outlook as any other species of humanity: ?In his earlier studies of the Negroes of Dutch Guiana and the United States, Herskovitz pioneered a field of great interest for studies of the diffusion of African culture.? Subsequent studies of religion and social organization in Brazil, in Dutch and British Guiana, in Cuba, the West Indies, and Surinam have confirmed that African religions, music and dance can survive under the most severe conditions of uprooting and transplanting; and syncretisms of African religion and rites of the Christian Church in these regions as well as in Africa itself give evidence of the vitality of some aspects of African culture. There is an impressive documentation of Africa?s contribution to world civilization. It is a widely shared aspiration of African peoples to make even greater contributions to the ever increasing common heritage of Man?(8).

The author also, in quite typical anthropological vein, envisages the contemporary African experience, especially vis-?-vis Africa?s violent encounter with the culturally cannibalistic and imperialist West, as a template for understanding evolutionary trends in ideological and cultural paradigm shifts: ?Studies of the traditional are exciting, and of historical interest; but we must not stop there, if we are to deal with the complex problems of cultural adjustments that African peoples have to make in the contemporary situation, or that the rest of the world must make to contemporary Africa. The traditional cultures of Africa are of value in providing a historical base for understanding the more recent events and ongoing trends of the present day?(8).

Even so, Busia is also quick to point to the urgent need for the ?study of Africa ? or African Studies ? to be elevated from the relatively primitive status of anthropology into a sociology, or a relatively more relevant and modernized sub-discipline. To this end, the first Ghanaian to be named to the august status of ?professor? at Ghana?s flagship academy, the University of Ghana, observes: ?In ?Civilization on Trial? Toynbee predicted that future historians would say that ?the great event of the 20th Century was the impact of Western civilization upon all other living societies of the world of that day. They will say [that] this impact was so powerful and so pervasive that it turned the lives of all its victims upside down and inside out affecting the behavior, outlook, feelings and beliefs of individual men, women and children in an intimate way, touching chords in human souls that are not touched by more external forces, however ponderous and terrifying.? The impact of Western civilization on the peoples of Africa affords the most striking illustration of the effects described by Toynbee ? ?it has turned lives upside down and inside out,? and made Africa an urgent and challenging field for sociological studies. I think the Chair established in the University for the Afrika Studiecentrum is justifiably designated as the Chair for the Sociology and Culture of Africa, because it draws attention thereby to the urgent need to extend our study to Africa as it is today; Africa as it has been made by the shattering impact of European science and technology, European rule, commerce, and education, and the propagation of Christianity by European missionaries?(8-9).

Busia also highlights two socioeconomic trends that have dominated twentieth-century Africa, namely, the rapid movement towards political independence from colonial imperialism and a dramatic paradigm shift in the economic mode of development: ?The two most striking features of the recent history of Africa are the progress toward political independence from colonial status, and the process of transforming traditional and mainly subsistence economies to modern ones. Problems of economic development loom large in all discussions on Africa. Both [of] these features give education a key role, for the need for trained personnel for administrative and technical posts becomes obvious and urgent?(9).

And the great thinker and social scientist ought to have known this as well as any African scholar and/or social scientist, being that the future Prime Minister Busia was the first of two Gold Coasters in colonial Ghana to be appointed as district administrators by the British colonial overlords, the other being the future distinguished career diplomat, Mr. A. L. Adu.

Likewise, on the political front, Busia recognized two major ideological trends, namely, the trend towards democratic federalism or a decentralized system of democratic governance, on the one hand, and the one-party dictatorship, pioneered by Ghana?s President Nkrumah, that came to dominate the continental African political landscape throughout the 1960s, 70s and 80s, broken in the various countries by adventurist military dictatorships. On the latter score, this is what the man who led Ghana?s first authentic democratic government had to say: ?Especially since World War II, the rapid acceleration of political and economic development in Africa has had the dimensions of a social revolution. Measures of economic development have affected the densities, distribution, mobility and stratification of populations. Political changes have altered patterns of authority, allegiance, and social groupings. New nations and political forms have emerged. Some of the new states are developing one-party authoritarian forms, in which traditional rulers are being swept away or swamped in the stream of change; others, paying more attention to local history and tradition, seek both progress and stability in federal forms; and in others, traditional monarchies seek to guide and preside over the inevitable change. Thus states like Ghana and Guinea, or Nigeria, or Ethiopia, or Uganda provide students of political systems with new typological models. ? New ideologies and aspirations, too, are among the forces of change, bringing Africa into contemporary ideological conflicts. All these pose problems for the social sciences; for fact-finding, analysis, interpretation, understanding and comparison?(9-10).

In the highly informed opinion of Busia, even in the face of epic modernistic transformation, there is to be recognized a remarkable centripetal and countervailing force pulling the African towards ancient African civilization and cultural practices. In other words, postcolonial Western-oriented development is by no means a passive and lineal progression but a veritably curvilineal dialogue between time-tested traditional values and beliefs, and the largely material and behavior-altering forces sweeping the entire continent from abroad: ?I refer to these theories in particular because, along with the plans and activities designed for change, there are also examples of a conscious return to a past golden age, in search of Africa?s own social heritage, and for norms rooted in a great past, whose revival, it is hoped, will again ensure grandeur and stability. ? The choice of the names of Ghana and Mali for the two new states in Africa, and the philosophical concept of ?negritude? of African intellectuals may be given as examples of traditionalism. Ghana goes back to an African empire which flourished in Western Sudan between 1000 and 1500 AD. It was displaced as the dominant state of West Africa by Mali which reached the height of its power and grandeur in the 14th Century, under King Kankan Musa whose authority spread from the coast of Senegal to the region of Niamey. Mali reached a degree of civilization which astounded Arab travelers, and won the esteem of the Mediterranean countries of the Middle Ages, because of its fabulous wealth. The choice of these names tells us that even where the wind of change is a hurricane, brakes may be provided by the pull of the past. ? Hence the conscious search for thickets of the past, hitherto ignored? (10-11).

For Busia, development is organically composed of material, psychical and spiritual components and ought to be envisaged as such, at least in the context of African sociology and culture: ?The philosophy of negritude of African intellectuals, whether we agree with it or dispute its validity, should bring it home to us that the peoples of Africa are seeking not only material culture, but also non-material values rooted in their own past, which will contribute to stability and sound progress, and national pride. ? The study of the Culture and Sociology of Africa must inescapably concern itself with values, not only because the right ordering of the moral and social life is the ultimate goal of human endeavor, but also because Africa is concerned with the behavior of different groups towards one another. The relationships and tensions between ethnic and racial groups is a matter of particular importance in East, Central and South Africa. ? Because of the considerable degree of cultural variability among the peoples of Africa, the student of African society cannot avoid asking to what extent the values of these various cultures are similar, and to what extent they are dissimilar. This, it is clear, poses a fundamental question for international relations? (11-12).

On the meaning and objective parameters of what constitutes ?African Sociology,? this is what Busia has to say: ?It is my hope, therefore, that in the study of the Sociology and Culture of Africa, we shall be sharing in the quest of the peoples of Africa to conquer poverty, disease and ignorance; in their struggle for stability and harmony in ever-widening groups, increasing in their range, complexity and heterogeneity; in their striving towards creativeness in art and science; in their yearning for acceptance as equals in the worldwide Brotherhood of Man?(12-13).

In this 16-page address on the Sociology of African History and Culture, the great African thinker and theorist calls for the practice of a social science that is humanistic and pragmatic in thrust: ?I have spoken of methodology and theories and systems in the Social Sciences. These are abstractions. They are conceptual tools, and not the reality. Sometimes, in the preoccupation with theories and systems, the reality is abstracted out of recognition; even out of existence. But the social sciences are human sciences. In the search for laws and systems, for concepts and objectivity, we do well to remember constantly that our studies concern human beings; that they deal primarily with men and women, with their happiness and suffering; with harmony and discord in social relations; with peace and war. Should the Social Sciences become only a matter of the head, obsessed only with the search for abstract theories and intellectually satisfying systems, without the human heart that shares human love and suffering, they will fail to serve mankind?(12).

Busia also pays glowing tribute to the first Ghanaian (and African) to be academically associated with the University of Leiden, Jacobus Eliza Johannes Capitein, 223 years before the former?s professorial appointment in 1960. Busia is also, as was to be circumstantially expected, full of effusive and even fulsome praises for his European hosts: ?The University of Leiden is one of the most illustrious seats of learning in Europe. On the 22nd [of] June 1737, Jacobus Eliza Johannes Capitein, an African from my country, came to study here at Leiden. I feel it a great honour, not only to myself, but to my country also, that I should be appointed a professor here over two hundred years after the first of my countrymen to study here was enrolled as a student at Leiden. It is humbling to think of the challenge and opportunity for research and scholarship which [this] office presents. ? We in Africa owe a great debt to this University and other seats of learning in Europe. I regard my appointment here as an opportunity to show in a small way something of the deep gratitude we feel to[wards] this and other great universities of Europe that have made it possible for us to become heirs with you of the wisdom of the ages?(13).
